they did say they seen some for a manual trans but i have an auto is there a difference?

Upon further checking I get 13 to 14 in town, I hardly use 5th gear because it's so low geared. Would a 3.73 swap make a huge difference in mpg?

As it is on highway I get about 20 it's the city mpg that disgusts me.

I like the look of my BFG's even if they're only 30x9.5's versus the 31x10.50... I would like to see a tad bit better mpg in town but keep my "bigger tires"

i looked at the vss gear chart in the trans thread and i didnt see a 16 tooth white gear. how do i figure out what gear i need? i seen a 16 tooth wine gear is that it? sorry about all the questions im new to this and i cant learn anything if i dont ask thanks for the info

ok so i can call the dealership and give them the part number or get the one for the manual trans and ill be good?

If you know the part # sure. I have always just told them I need the VSS gear in (X) color, RH, and (X) tooth count.

They maybe discontinued now, but I am sure a dealer somewhere has one in stock that can be shipped to them. I have had to do that just last year.

when i called they said they seen the gears for the manual trans but i didnt know the auto and man used the same gears so ill call in the mornin and hopefull ill be able to get me a gear

She's no speed demon and
To be fair, she's ridiculously, pathetically slow but that's the only problem.

LMAO..... This says it all right here..... I have the 3.27 rear annnnnd 3.27 first gear inside my 5 speed..... So pathetically slow is the perfect answer!

You guys are insane with theoretical situations. Explorers are slower than sick dogs bone stock. A 31" tire won't hurt it nearly as much as you're saying. I had 34x10.50s on my '92 EB with a 2" lift and made 14+mpg all city (LTBs don't like highway) on 3.73s. I drove it most days because it made 3mpg better than my '05 F150 was getting in town.

Do the 31s and you'll notice a subtle difference but you'll be fine.

gotmy 31 10.50s and i love them i put some cooper discover stt on the truck i havent done any serious off roadin but what i have done i love the tires with my ats i had i had to give it somegas now the truck crawls by itself i love em

You guys are all silly you will be fine, I'm runnin 33's with 3:27 gears and it actually has some power once it gets into the power band. The automatic might kind of suck but with the 5spd its not too bad, 5th gear sucks for anything but flat ground, as for wheeling it holds its own in 4lo after tackling many 3's and going down some 4's you will be fine.

Soooo

With my 92 4.0 5 spd I should be ok running 32's with my 3:27 gears?

Never dealt with gearing before, ever.

I'm assuming you read this entire post?

If not go back and try again.... you will find your answer.

Yes I did. I've heard It will be fine and I've heard it will be doggy. Was hoping for a little more convincing in either direction.

Well the 4.0 isn't exactly a powerhouse to begin with. It's just slow all the way around.

3.73 gears will amp up the take off, I had them in my 94 ranger....

I'm pretty sure later model explorers had them.... just not sure what year.

Sorry to come off as a jack@$$....... some folks don't like to read and re-ask the same ?'s

It's all good. This is my first 4x4, coming over from the lowered truck world and I know jack squat about gearing. Compared to my rangers 4 banger this 4.0 is heaven to me.

I want to use it as a daily driver, just didn't want to gas mileage to get much worse. Thanks for the info.
