Many interesting posts on the size of tire possible with various lifts but what if one wants to continue using the stock rims? By stock I mean 15x7. Isn't the old rule of thumb "no wider than 2" over wheel width"?

I intend to install a 4" Superlift to replace my Skyjacker 2". I'm running 10.5x31 now and would like to go bigger and remain safe.

Thanks,

Bob

I have two sets of 33x12.50 tires mounted on stock 15x7 wheels. I have had no problems at all with them in over two years. I also have a friend who runs the same size on his Ranger. He has had no problems in four years.

No problems, that sounds OK. The question is wear. 12.5's on a 7" rim will wear prematurely because they will be high in the centre of the wheel. If you do run this setup, better to keep a few PSI lower than regular to flatten the tire.

I've run 33" BFG MT's on my stock rims for three years. The rims are 15X7 with 4.5" backspacing. I'm on my second set of tires, the first set reached 45,000+ miles with even tread wear, before replacing. I ran 27lbs. in front, and 22lbs. in back to achieve the even wear. Keep in mind this is on a Ranger, which is lighter in the back than an Explorer.

Recommended wheel width for a 31X10.5R15 is 7 to 9 inches. The stock wheels are just fine, and will keep the tires inside the fender, preventing rubbing, and mud on your truck's sides.
