I just blew a 2nd tranny in my 91 explorer 4x4. Granted the last one was from the junk yard and this one was old as well.

Is there any stronger replacement? Any other ideas?

Thanks

First off, more and more I am thinking a junkyard tranny was where it belonged. Hard to judge trannies you know nothing about from a junkyard. Anyway.... my thoughts on your tranny #3 (How do you drive these things?)

First... a "properly built A4LD". Not many shops know how to do this apparently.

Second.... a "Frankentranny" late model 5R55 guts into an A4LD case. About the best you will do without swapping...

Last.... a swap. Like a GM 700R4... a lot of work but much stronger than either of 1 or 2.

[This ain't a real plug but I am starting to build Frankentrannys to sell. I think it makes the most sense.]

Swapping to a manual (M5R1) might probably suit you well.

I was stuck in the auto mode... yeah I agree.... good call Creager!

Glacier, will you make a mini Frankentranny thread of your own that shows your updates with a parts list? It would be great to be able to buy a Frankentranny upgrade kit with all of the parts in one kit. I remember a while ago you mentioned that you were planning on making a DVD. How is that coming along?

Yeah.......Get another Explorer. I had two trannies go on my 92 Sport too. Considering the age of the vehicle and mileage, wasn't worth my putting anymore money into it. Bought a 98 Sport in February for $4K with my tax return and it's in very good condition too

Sweeet  I'd be on board for a Glacier Rebuild any day... Unfortunately my A4ld @ 13yrs+ is still holding its own... I change the fluid every 35K and baby it with slow to moderate accelleration. I hardly ever mash the go pedal (which IMO cause additional wear and tear)
