I've got a 99 XLT that's AWD. My wife switched to 4wd yestarday and now it won't come out of HI. The vehicle is AWD anyways but with it stuck in 4HI it makes it difficult to park. Also, the dash indicators don't show the truck is in 4HI but the lights blink intermittently. Any suggestion? Thanks in advance for the help.

Stuck shift motor?
It's not AWD because AWD has no lowrange, its full-time 4x4 (aka Control Trac)

Search the forum for shift motor ... you can easily disassemble it and clean it, which usually solves the problem.

Thanks a million for the suggesion. Sounds exactly like my problem. I'll work on it this evening and let you know what comes of it. Thanks again!

had similar problem...

I had a similar problem in a 98 sport...turned out it was an electronic sensor in the tranfer case (I think that is where the mechanic told me it was) that kept telling the truck to engage the 4wd when it didn't need be..the lights kept blinking on off etc. It could be similar problem.
good luck!

O.K. so I took the shift motor off but since it's hard-wired into my transfer case I didn't remove it, just left it dangling. I did notice that the H-N-L on the transfer case under the Shift Motor was set to H. I started the SUV and switched it to 4LO and the shift motor didn't move. Does the vehicle need to be moving for the switch motor to work? Either the switch on the dash is not working properly or the switch motor is bad. Thanks for the help!

Did you have the truck in neutral with your foot on the brake when you tried switching to Low?
