Flashing 4wd high & 4wd low

my 99 SOHC XLT has been flashing these at me for a couple of weeks now. The dealer does not know the problem.
the 4wd lights flash a few time then goes out for a few minutes and then a few more flashes, this is all the time.
the truck is auto 4wd and seems to engage itself when needed however when I turn the dial the to 4wd high the light will not come on ( it just continues to do the flashing thing) it will not go into low range either..
any thoughts?????

a.) If you search you will find plenty of threads on this topic
b.) For a quick-fix, disconnect the battery for a few minutes, and then reconnect. If it is just an intermittent issue, this will clear the lights.

on my 97 I had to clean the sensor your 4wd will not lock in if they are flashing... if dirty I would clean and drain the t-case with new fluid... (merc 5 I beleive)
