blinking 4wd low and high

Hello I am new to this but have been trouble shooting my issue. I have a 1998 4wd merc, the 4wd lights have started blinking 6 times every few minutes, i dont have a lot of money so i am tryn to fix this myself. just wondering if i should take it to my mechanic and explain what ive read and test it before i sink a lot of money into it. i do use the 4wd often up in big bear..... any help would be grt, its all stock with rancho xl9000 and 31s with no lift, grt truck. Thanks
