2014 Ford Explorer
Hello, All,

New here to the Ford Explorer Forum. Just thought I would put this out there. We have a 2014 Explorer with 23,538 miles on it. Bought it new 22 payments ago. It's currently at the dealership with a blown engine. We headed out for a two and a half hour trip and all was good. Two hors. later the Explorer was on the rollback. Not one indicator light came on, no smoke, and the oil was still full and clean. The service manager said it was a broken rod and they ordered a new engine. I have owned over 20 cars, trucks and suv's; never had an engine go out. I have read a few posts about engines going for now apparent reason, but I am still totally baffled on this one. Once I get some specifics on the issue I will post them. Thanks for listening and hope this doesn't happen to you!

Welcome to the forum, and sorry to hear of your troubles.

I moved your thread to our Stock 2011+ subforum.

Unfortunately freak things like that happen once in a while. Hopefully the dealer is good at what they do and get things done in a timely and correct manner.

^^^^ x2

Broken rod.. just a freak thing and unfortunately it happened to you. Wouldn't be something I'd be concerned about happening again.

A freak thing happened like that to my G35...blown engine at 60K...they never really knew the exact cause but like you..no warning lights ect

In most cases like this they never know for sure what caused the failure. They know the engine is toast but unless they tear it down a broken rod is only a guess. Taking the time to tear it down would be on the dealer's dime not Ford so they don't bother.

jdke, any updates on the new engine?

I just ran into your post after running a search for "blown engine" on this forum. Your story is eerily similar to what happened to me and my family this weekend. I also have a '14 Explorer (V6, XLT), mine has just over 20,000 miles.

I see you are in PA, we were near Frostburg MD on Route 68 heading from the Baltimore area to SW PA (2.5hrs in just like you) when I noticed we were losing power coming up a hill, the engine downshifted and was racing. I backed off the accelerator but it just held the gear (not sure why it downshifted).

I manually upshifted to take some pressure off the engine and even at ~3k RPM with moderate throttle we were losing speed. I backed off the throttle more and started working my way to the side of the road when I started hearing a rattling sound from the engine that just got progressively louder and then the sound just stopped and a huge cloud of billowing white smoke started pouring out of the car. Luckily we were able to get off the highway and by the time we stopped the engine was already dead.

I've had some crazy things happen in previous vehicles but this was the scariest. Especially since I had my wife and two very young children with me in the car.

We called for a wrecker and we had the vehicle dropped off at the closest Ford dealer. When we took the vehicle off the truck we noticed the Explorer was dripping a nice mixture of what was probably oil and coolant. The dealer was closed for the weekend so I left my keys in the overnight drop box with a note and contact info. Luckily we knew a friend that was about an hour away and we stayed with them and then rented a car and got back home the next day.

Called the dealer this morning and they said they were busy and might not be able to look at it "until later this week". I was shocked by that and didn't know what to say. I just left my new (to me) vehicle that left us stranded at a dealer two and a half hours from home and they aren't even going to look at it until later this week???

I'm going to call back first thing tomorrow, I was really at a loss for (sane) words at that point. I'm not sure if it's possible but I'm hoping I can have the vehicle transported to my local dealer just a few miles away.

I'm curious to know how long this process took for you. I'm also paying out of pocket expenses for a rental car. It would be great if I could get my car to my local dealer and get a loaner. If anyone else has suggestions as well please let me know. My wife and I both work full-time and we have the two small kids so this is a huge inconvenience (and I'm still just shocked that my 2014 vehicle with 20k miles just blew up).

Shawn
