Well after about a year and a half I have blown my 6th transmission on boxing day. #7 is hopefully coming friday or saturday. Ive learnt a valuable lesson in this scenario.. when your stuck, dont quickly shift between forward and reverse, give a few seconds in neutral.

I believe the failure was from a snap ring that came loose on the large gear that goes over the low/reverse planetary, as it was torn to shreds along with the planetary and the bushing between it. Also the sun gear? that the planetary sits on is damaged too.

I wish! Last one was $400.. Every time a rebuilder has rebuilt one its only lasted a year so i started going to the wreckers..

Zip tie one of these under the gas pedal so you dont step on it too hard

Yup thats the plan this time :)

Just so happen to have food poisoning right now (from xmas dinner) so i wont even be able to touch it for a couple days :(

Yea, but if you do step onto it too hard, you got a cute mess to clean up...

Idk if it'll still be "cute" when you clean it up haha. My trans has been doing weird things lately so I guess I should be prepared to shovel out some dough. How much do you think a rebuild would be for a 96 auto trans, since you have some experience and all.

Every rebuild i have had has been around $1400 - $1800 Canadian, and both failed within the year. Ive only had it rebuilt twice, every other time ive gotten a replacement from a wreckers. No one is good at rebuilding them around here, especially when the last rebuild died because of a roller falling out of a bearing that wasn't replaced.. got caught in the valve body by the looks of it..

I went through 3 transmissions in just under 2.5 years...

I upgraded to a 5.0L just for the better transmission options.

Well the replacement one is in, not impressed so far, i trust it as far as i can throw it.. but its likely because the fluid hadent filled the torque converter until i started going...

And a correction, this is #6 now, I think i lost count after the 4rth time :p

I don't understand why I hear about so many rebuild failures on these transmissions.

Are they too complicated or something?!

I remember back in the day when I had my A4LD rebuilt I had heard that there were transmission shops that didn't want to TOUCH A4LD's because of so many come-back's. Don't know whether this was true or not.

intresting i had the Same exact failure to the part that failed, but mine was a '04 5r55s. . . .only 52k on it too. you'd think they would have it fixed by now . . .
had mine rebuilt for $1600us $800 in parts, got a good deal.

Wierd.. i didnt even bother getting this one rebuilt.. not worth it when the engine could die any time or something else could go because of the age..

35Remmy, these suckers just have so many possible issues. lots of weak parts.

Every year had a production change of some sort. There were differences if they were being used with a 3.0L or a 4.0L, 4 X 4 or with a 4 cylinder engine. The rebuilders are in a state of confusion.
