bolt stuck in block

Ok I got my new JBA headers the other day. While removing the old ones I had problems with two bolts. Bolt #1 is sticking out of the block about 2". What would be the best way to get this one out. Bolt #2 came out about 90% and the decided to brake. Which leaves about a 1/4" of the bolt in the block. With this bolt there is nothing sticking out to grab on like bole #1. So I'm guessing that I am going to have to get the drill out for that one. Any help would we great dealing with what procedure to follow and what tools to use.

P.S. I'm not happy so far with the JbA Headers. I will get into this latter when I get my truck running.

Fisrt make sure the threads are clean, use a wire brush or something. Oil the threads well and run the bolt back in a bit and allow it to sit. You may have to do this several times to break the rust or grit loose. Be careful drilling the other one out and use a good strong easy-out.

Just read something the other day that I have not tried but it may help in your situation. Read it in a Service Bulletin from a Marine manufacturer. It said when you have a fastener (bolt, nut, stud, etc.) that is stuck, put fresh lemon juice on it and allow it to sit for a few minutes. It said it works better than penetrating lubes like WD-40. Said the acid in the juice will actually attack the rust and cause it to disolve and will free up the fastener. Have not tried it yet but it makes sense.

On your bolt that is broken inside the block, I would recommend using the lemon juice and drilling a smaller hole in the broken bolt with a LEFT HAND DRILL BIT with the drill on reverse. The left hand bit will actually cause the bolt to back out as opposed to running down farther in the hole and making it almost impossible to remove. Your bolt is probably about a 5/16 or 3/8" diameter or the metric equivalent. I would try using about a 3/16 bit but try to center it in the bolt or center punch it if possible. If you drill all the way thru the broken bolt and it still does not offer to come out, then try the extractor, but be careful...break it off and it is VERY DIFFICULT to try to drill out. Believe me, I have had it to happen.

Keep us posted and let us know what happens. I am a Marine/Recreational Mechanic and am curious about this remedy.

Here is another thought. If the bolt is loose you can sometimes use a sharp object and hook it on one of the burrs that are on the broken bolt. I was able to do this on a rocker arm bolt before. If the bolt is too tight this won't work but it is still worth a try.
