for $300 dollars what is the best mod to make to a 96 explorer to boost its performance (hp, torque, and preferably mileage too) which would make the greatest difference for the buck?

Either Exhaust or Chip

if you want power in the form of horsepower and torque, get a chip. if you want a lil more horsepower, but much better gas mileage, and not much torque (potentially even less torque), get exhaust.

what exactly is a chip? i searched and found stuff on them but no explanation of what it is, where it goes, and what it does. i only know the thing costs around 210 dollars. thanks.

try a search, theres a ton of info on a chip. www.superchips.com will also tell you what it does. you plug it into your computer in your truck and it changes the air/fuel ratio, shift points, etc. its a great mod :D

something else that might help....

Go to www.smartyparts.com website. They have a basic (I found super helpful) list of mods you can do to your Explorer. They will also say to chip it first. It's truly the biggest bang for your buck.
Chip.....exhaust.....intake......and then the cat's out of the bag and you really have to decide where you want to take your truck because each modification step will be different.
Good luck!

For a power as well as mileage boost, spend the $300 on a KKM intake and a custom cat back exhaust.

Good luck.....

thanks guys. this was really helpful. now i got knowledge and need money. in a month or two... ill tell yall when i get my stuff.

youre right about the gas mileage, but he'll get more power out a chip, no doubt about it.

whitmcrae, what are your priorities? power, then mileage, or the other way around?

to tell you the truth im not sure. i want both, but probably ill go with the exhaust first because it will be a little bit of both. maybe a superchip at the end of summer depending on money situation (after my 3 inch body lift, TT which im gonna do this weekend, and AAL). i think i know the main advantages and disadvantages of teh two now. thanks.

P.S. is catback the best exhaust or are there any good duelies for the X?

you can do dual exaust on exploders however make sure that you keep the pipe size small, i don't believe that an explorer can handle dual 3 inch pipes.... so if you go dual keep the pipe size around 2.25 because anything bigger than that i've heard will "take backpressure off the engine and you'll actually loose power."

Makes you wonder about all these "Ricers" that slap the 5 inch tip mufffler on the cars, wonder if they loose torque and how much.

sittin stock the explorers have around 220-230 Ft/lbs torque.
which isn't really bad, but could get better.

rice burners blow! american sportscars like the Vette, the Viper, and the new Ford concept GT40 smoke all of the 4 cyllinder POS's with big mufflers that some people think are fast because they put spoilers on them and extra plastic to make them look lower. i repeat, "ricers" blow big time.

I've eaten rice. No, I am not a stud. But damn was it fun to dust a Civic all decked out. I thought my front UV joint was going to snap (it needs to be replaced anyway)!!:D

If you have a 5.0L a Hypertech Powerprogrammer III is a great product. Adds around 20hp, lets you select the octane of fuel you want to use, program shifts, etc.

Its a little over $300, around $350
