So, following the advice of some folks here, I ordered a Bosch 66085 fuel pump.

Anyone else getting a Walbro GSS250 in their Bosch box?

As far as I knew, Bosch and Walbro/TI were separate entities.

Not upset, Walbro is good stuff, was just surprised to find it.

definitely not the same
where did you order it from

Walbro made by TI industries USA whereas Bosch pumps made by Bosch usually in Germany

I would not be installing the Walbro they are inferior IMO
I'm not saying walbro is bad, I'm saying the Bosch is better and it sounds like you got scammed
I would report this to wherever you bought it from

Bosch $112
walbro $75
at summit racing

If you pay for BOSCH it should say BOSCH
Someone is making $40 on each pump they sell

So, I filed a return claim with RockAuto over the Walbro-in-Bosch box, and had them ship me another one.

The replacement showed up today, and it is, again, a Walbro GSS 250 inside a Bosch box.

I'm going to call Bosch and see if I can figure out what's going on.

I strongly disagree
Walbro is a OEM pump
I'm sure they have a cheaper line of pumps but you get what you pay for
Bosch pumps fail to lol

So, the Bosch rep called me back, and assured me that Bosch has no partnership with Walbro, and is not shipping boxes with Walbro pumps in them.

He wouldn't explicitly say it, but he insinuated that someone (perhaps the distributor that RockAuto uses?) is removing Bosch pumps and putting Walbro pumps in the box.

He suggested that I buy one from NAPA - but NAPA is almost double the cost.

I'm going to source one from another vendor and see what happens. NAPA doesn't have one anywhere local, so I'd have to order it and pre-pay, rather than inspect what they have in stock.

Pretty serious claim about rock auto or one of their vendors.

Just sayin'

More powerful (PSI) aftermarket pump than my OEM Bosch Factory Pump ever was until it failed at 201,000 miles.

Carry on -

TYC 152017A for $15.58 @ Rock Auto

Upgraded the provided fuel strainer to Extra Large Fuel Strainer on Fuel Pump (Denso 952-0033).

I don't see how it could possibly be RockAuto doing this - they don't have their own stocking warehouses, they drop-ship from others.

Edited to add: The Bosch rep mentioned that he has recently had a handful of same reports - a Walbro in a Bosch box. I called him back to clarify, and he did confirm that some of these reports are from resellers other than just RockAuto, so I do believe that absolves RockAuto of any suspicion in this matter.

I trust RockAuto implicitly, and as mentioned above, 99.999% of the time, the part you buy from RockAuto is never in their hands, so they couldn't be culpable here.

A claim was filed with rock auto so they know. Maybe this vendor meets or exceeds their standards? Time will tell...

What do you mean, meets or exceeds?

As in, Bosch is putting the Walbro GSS250 in, because it meets or exceeds Bosch 66085 specifications?

Yeah, I don't see that - Bosch and Walbro/TI are not the same company. When a Bosch product engineer confirms that Bosch isn't buying Walbro pumps and putting them in the box, and that the product that's supposed to be in the box has the Bosch name stamped in it, I really don't think that Bosch is doing this themselves.

What I mean is rock auto has been made aware of what this vendor is doing with the claim ticket. Maybe rock auto didn't know before now, but I'd expect them to monitor and drop the vendor if they keep doing this.

I wouldn’t want to make a big deal out of this but I ended up buying a walbro and it’s made in the USA - I seem to recall the Bosch units were fabricated in China

bosch pumps are made in Germany
Ive been a customer of rockauto for over 7 years, I had once instance where they sent the cheaper (inferior) part I was not happy
that is ONE out of HUNDREDS of orders

I easily have 15+ years (probably more) and literally hundreds of Rock Auto orders over 4 different car models and 100% customer satisfaction.

Additionally, they have the best online catalog with multiple picture views of each part they sell.

Your mileage may vary ;)

Rock Auto is the best, I have zero issue with them.

For ***** and giggles, I ordered a Bosch 66085 from Amazon - same thing, Walbro in the box.

NAPA hasn't been able to get a Bosch in stock, so following the Bosch rep's advice, and buying from NAPA has been a no-go.

Only related to RockAuto, no experience with the fuel pumps. I ordered two motor mounts, left and right. They were both from the same manufacture (the boxes anyway), but one was obviously of very poor quality and it was also obvious the box had been opened and taped back together. That is also the one the top stud broke off of while many miles off the highway on a multi-day rock crawling expedition. We ended up chaining that side of the engine down.

I was going to order a Bosch fuel pump just to have on hand if mine failed, since its OEM and 28 years old. Maybe I'll hold off a bit.

Edit: RockAuto doesn't seem to be carrying the Bosch or the Walbro fuel pumps for my 1994 currently. They do have a Delphi pump and housing, which is a complete kit for $75.79. I've used Delphi products in the past with good results, they are part of Borg-Warner and an OEM supplier to GM.

I ran into a similar issue with Moog ball joints from RA. Moog stopped making them, and there were some left at the distributor. They all had torn boots. You’d order through RA, they’d ship out the BJs. I’d see the torn boots, send them back. They’d ship replacements. These also had torn boots. Tried it one last time.

THEY SENT THE ORIGINAL BJS BACK TO ME, WITH THE SAME TAPE JOB I DID TO THE BOXES.

Guys just threw the damaged BJs back on the shelf after I returned them. They were going to offload those things, come hell or high water.

One thing to note that I've found out about RockAuto is that they don't ship 99% of what they sell.

They're drop-shipping via larger vendors/distributors. As such, it's not them that's farking up your order, but some schmuck at a Parts Authority warehouse, or something similar.

Next time you get a shipment from RockAuto, punch the shipping address into Google Maps and you can find out who RockAuto placed their order to (and therefore, who shipped it to you).

I've gotten stuff from various Parts Authority locations, from "Hanson Distributing" in Azusa, CA, which is a Bumper-to-Bumper distributor, all that kind of stuff.

Have you tried searching for the exact Bosch part number? The 66085 for the Explorer isn't listed when drilling down for my year/make/model, but does come up when I search for it directly.
