Been dealing with a bouncing speed-o. Kinda just dealt with it untill it started affecting shifting at low speeds. Started down shifting when it the speed o would drop at low speeds. I switched out the cluster. NO help. Bought a new VSS and looked at the gear inside trans case. It appeared to be worn. Replaced VSS and NO help. I now assume its the Drive gear inside the trans case. Its a 1996 4wd. Can I access it through the output or does it have to come down? Thanks in advance...

Is it cable driven? I know on taurus' it happens when there is lack of lube in the speedo cable

No, his is electronic. I didn't believe it could happen till it happened to me, but there was a little flat spot worn into the gear, so it was missing a tooth or 2 of the driven gear as it went around.

If yours has a tail-shaft extension housing sticking out the back like the 4406 does, then you can unbolt that in place and pull it off (after dropping the drive shaft). There is a clip in front of the gear (towards the case) that pops off, then you slide the gear forward, remove the ball bearing, and slide the gear off the end of the shaft.

If yours does NOT have the extension housing, then you need to drop the tcase and split the case to access the gear. I believe my old awd tcase was that way.

Kevlar Im not exactly sure I follow what you mean be "extension" the vss appears to be right behind "within a inch or so" behind the round output plate.. Would u consider this extended?

You have to split the case... There isnt a separate tail housing on the 4405 like the 4406.

Yuck.....well then, might be easier to just find a used tcase and swap the whole thing out.

Not really... these cases are very simple.
