Just a little curious - why does it seem the front brakes throw off more dust than the rear? Is ti just because of the forward momentum or is it something more complicated... Thanks :)

Braking force is usually applied approx. 60% in the front and 40% in the rear, hence the different wear characteristics and dust quantity.

Plus, if you have drum brakes in the rear, they won't generate much dust at all. Only disc brakes produce a lot of dust. You can look at 100 cars/trucks a day and look at their front wheels, they will often be dirtier than the rears.

If your Explorer has disc brakes on all for corners then you will likely still see more dust on the fronts because like PLR said the fronts do more stopping.

Adam, not trying to steer you in any direction but, I changed brakes to Raybestos Quietstop's the last brake job ( 6 months ago ) and there is hardly any dust at all on the wheels. Take a look around and see what's out there that produces less dust.

Goober,

I don't get a tremendous amount of dust. However, when it comes time to wash it, I always notice that the fronts are dirtier than the rear rims. I will look into those brakes though.
