1998 Mountaineer
Hello guys, long time reader first time poster.

I own a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer. Iv'e looked just about everywhere to see if I can't pinpoint this problem. I'm not an expert by any means, call me a newb if you will, but i'm learning :P

Anyways, 2/3 of my rear lights do not work at all. I've replaced them, but they just don't work. The brake light on my rear door is the only thing working at the moment, and even then it flickers when the car is off.

I've checked all the fuses and they look fine, none of them are blown. I'm assuming it's a short circuit or something, but not quiet sure. Some feedback would be great.

Thanks in advance :D

Sounds like you're going to need to start tracing the circuits. See what you get for voltage and check for shorts. Also check that your brake light switch (at the pedal) is functioning - use a continuity tester or check inline for 12v.

I can't answer exactly where you are having issues but sometimes it is not what you'd expect. I had a 94 which had left and right brake lights sometimes not functioning. It was totally random whether they'd work or not. Circuit tests proved nothing because I couldn't catch it in the act of failing. Turned out the problem was a worn out turn signal switch - it would droop or hang in a position that would cut out one brake light or the other, without actually activating the blinker.
