So I went to get my 2001 Explorer XLT inspected as I have moved to Delaware and they promptly tell me that it does not pass because my brake lights are out (all of them). I check fuses and can't locate anything with that (even though I replaced both the left and right stop light fuses but the top light is out too). So I decide it has to be the brake light swith (or what some places call a Stop Lamp Switch I believe).

So I go down to Autozone and give my information and I get what I believe is the right part, only to see that it is not the right one when I get back. The part I need has 4 prongs in a row where as this one has 3 in a 2 and 1 format.

So what part do I need (and I'm assuming this is what is causing it)? If anyone has any other ideas as to what it might be please let me know.

Also, how in the world do you get the thing off? It looks like theres some kind of clip holding it on but I'm not sure how it will eventually come off.

Finally I have an issue where my cruise control just randomly stopped working awhile ago. I JUST read about the recall (and since I bought my car used I don't think I would be getting the recall notice) so I called my dealership in the area to set up an appointment to get it fixed. I would also assume this is the problem but any other suggestions would be helpful.

You guys are the best!:salute:

I took some pictures of what they sold me, and what my brake light switch looks like.

Here's the entire product they gave me

Thanks again for the help!

It could be that but the only thing that makes me think its not it that at work we have 3 crown vics and the break switches go form time to time ....considering they're drivin so much,,,,anyway when the switches go you are unable to take the car out of park .... bc on fords it is electronicly controlled.......the fact that your truck has no problem there makes me think there is some other problem. Im not sure but thats what came to mind

if you mean recall # 03s03, that's for the cable.

jumper pins 4 and 5 (LG/RD, LG) on the connector and check your brake lights. if lights come on you have a bad switch. if they don't come on, check for power on LG/RD wire (fuse #13 20amp).

switch is a Brake Pedal Position Switch

Thanks for the advice! I'll test it when I go home! I dont see a Brade Pedal Position Switch listed on Autozone's website, any idea as to where I might be able to buy one?

give them a call, they may have to order it.

i show F87Z13480AA as the ford part number.

Wow thanks a lot, rockauto and autozone both do not show that as the switch I need but that IS it! Its under Rock Auto as a Brake Light Fail Switch. Thanks a lot GREATLY appreciate it!

no prob

So after all that research and driving around I did, after reading cjones' messages I actually went and checked fuse 13 to find it blown. Replaced the fuse and now the brake lights work again AS WELL AS the Cruise Control for no apparent reason.

THANKS!!!!!

When I use my horn, the fuse for it blows, and it also disables my cruise control. But according to the manual, the cruise control isn't part of the horn fuse.

i could be mistaken but i belive it is.
my problem is that my horn wont work, found a bad relay in the power distribution box under the hood, i swapped a realy next to it and the horn works.

but i took the realy out to take it to ford to get a new one. the cruise did not work, BUT if i put the bad relay back in, the cruise will work...... odd, but i thought i would let you know. hope you can narrow it down. what about the wires that go to the brake lights after the brake light switch?
