Hi I am new here but I have done a lot of searching and have not found a similar situation. The brake light on the dash of my 1999 Ex is lit and does not go out. I took it to a mechanic and they told me it needs a new master cylinder.

I found posts here that state that only 2 things should cause the light to come on. 1) low brake fluid 2) the parking brake engaged or the switch malfunctioning. Is the mechanic wrong?

Brake fluid is full. Brakes are working fine.

I plan on checking on the parking brake this weekend. I tried it out this afternoon and found it is not working well. Does not hold very good.

Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

Perhaps bleed your brakes? Maybe air in the rear?

I know what you're talking about though, I have this problem on my 93 occasionally. It's always been low brake fluid. Normally after I refill the fluid I'll press the brake all the way down and let it up and then with a friends help I'll bleed the brakes. Problem goes away.
