Is it the ABS working? Or is it a different kind of noise?

I would inspect the brake pads onj the fron b4 you drive it any place- that grinding sound is present when one of the pads has worn below friction lining and is damaging the disk. Change all four (front set), and you are good to go. pulsing is the abs cutting in, maybe you have to use the brakes harder and quicker than b4 to stop! Do the pads first then see if the pulsing is gone- bet it has mate.

5.0

not the ABS, when i get to the bottom there is almost a mechanical grinding noise, and the a kind of pushback ,,,,, (that said I am a newbie who wants to get his hands dirty,, but 99% sure it's not ABS)

thanks,
DJ

Does the steering wheel shake at all or do you hear any grinding at slow speeds?

If you want to find out if it's your ABS kicking in, disable your ABS by removing the fuse and see if the symptoms still exist.

If they don't, it's your ABS. Search the forums, look for "false ABS activation". It's a fairly common problem.

Blee,

the steering wheel does not shake, and i don't hear
any grinding at slow speed either,

thanks

Hi,
I had what seems to be exactly the same problem on my 99' North Face.Got my local garage to replace front discs and pads, no more noise and pedal feedback just silent and smooth braking. they said old discs were corroded as the truck had been hardly used for a while, hope this helps.

Hi deskjockey, did you sort the problem??? I've had 2 Explorers now and they both have had this sort of problem. On both it was the exact same thing....the ABS sensor on the front hub!!! Just removed and cleaned the left front side sensor and no more problems. Yeah i'd say the hub itself is probably on its way out but at least the brakes work fine at mo :D
