Brake question

I recently changed the brake pads on the rear and I'm going to be changing the pads on the front soon. I was told that the rotors should be turned each time the pads are changed.

Is this true and or required?

If the rotors meet minimum thickness requirements, and have no lateral runout then they don't need to be turned.
 






What do you mean by "lateral runout"
 






It is when your ladder sneaks out of your shead and makes a run for it.

I've never turned my rotors.. just bought a new one or two. It is not required. If your brakes are pulsing.. or squeeling a lot.. you might want to do it.
 






Lateral runout is the amount that the surface of the rotor moves from side to side as you rotate it past a single point (like your brake pad for example). If the runout is greater than allowed by the spec, it is refered to as a 'warped' rotor.

You can measure this by using a dial indicator and some type of clamp to attach the dial indicator to the frame or a suspension part, then rotate the rotor one complete revolution. The total amount of movement (usually measured in thousandths of an inch) is the lateral runout. If the runout is more than allowed (specs are in the service manual) then you may be able to have the rotors machined (turned) to eliminate the runout or you may have to replace the rotors if there is not enough thickness to allow machining.

Rotors should only be turned if:

1. The rotor is warped, causing a shaking brake pedal, or...

2. The pads are completly gone, and you were grinding metal to metal, or...

3. The old pads were wearing out the rotor unevenly, which causes new pads put on to wear out even faster on the uneven rotor......
 






Well my rotors look good to me. No warping, pedal pulsing or grinding. So I'm just going to install the new pads and go from there.

Are ceramic pads really better than semi-metalic?
