though my truck isnt exactly stock anymore (which may have somethin to do with my problem) I put it in this forum part. When it rains or my brakes get wet, they lock up when I brake, and not that hard really. I am pretty sure it is the rear drums on my 93. The anti lock brakes up front are workin fine. It seems to be both rears locking when the brake is applied fairly firm, when they are wet...anyone have this happen or knowwhat it is...the onl thing I can figure is the wet is doin it, and maybe there is some mud or somethin in there...any ideas?...but even wet that isnt supposed to happen

No ABS light? My guess would be a bad RABS valve. But you usually get the light when it dies.....

yeah...i dont think the rear has ABS...does it?....i thought the front discs were the ones with it...i dont know

1st gen explorers

earlier first gen x's, (i have a 92) only have rear anti-lock brake systems, whereas newer models have 4-wheel systems. i am having this same problem, but there is not ABS diag connector under the hood(my bro has a 94 and he has one on the driver's side fender close to the firewall) so does anyone knows where the diag connector is on earlier models, or even better, has anyone figured out a solution(i suspect it may be a fault ABS motor, but its too much trouble to take test it, much easier if i could find the diag connector) i also do not see an ABS light lit in the control panel.

yesterday I took off the rear drums and cleaned up the brakes, they had all kinds of grit and dirt in there...the drum lining is rough now and the pads are rough cause of the grit tearin them up I guess...it has been actin better and the antilocks are workin fine cause I tested them...so we will see how it goes...

I have a 91 EB and I experience the same problem. I get no ABS light and after awhile it goes away. If anyone comes up with an answer...please shoot me an email if you don't mind...shauste@yahoo.com

Thanks

clean out those bad boys...i did it and its been fine lately...also make sure your drum pads are still ok...my ABS works fine, try slammin your brakes 'safely' and see if everything feels right, my abs was working in back even when they were lockin up

Like everyone else is saying, clean the rear brakes using brakleen and get all dirt, dust, oil, or brake fluid off of shoes and drums. If wheel cylinders are leaking, they should be rebuilt or replaced. If axle seals are leaking, replace them. If all of this does not help, it may be neccesary to replace the rear brake shoes. I have found that some shoes are very sensitive to moisture. My 88 ranger would work ok for a while after cleaning but wouldn't last long. Replacing the shoes was a permanent fix. It's been fine for three years.
