Over the weekend while backing up out of my brothers driveway (which is fairly long) I noticed that with the factory "Privacy Glass", the reverse lights are not near bright enough.

Is there a way to get better/brighter light without adding extra lights?
As in, replacing the factory bulbs with something better?

I have the same issue with my explorer
I am mounting some lights that face the rear
Maybe there are other options but who can complain with being able to light everything up, right?

I have had luck with http://www.amazon.com/Halogen-Style-Super-Bright-Back-Up/dp/B0007N207G/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I did drill 2 small holes in the back if the housing (one on top one on bottom) as they do get hotter but not sure you need to do that.

I wouldn't think drilling a hole would be necessary. I usually don't leave it in reverse for that long of a time. But then again you never know when you will end up on a dead end in the hills with no room to turn around.

I did search the forum, and found where there was (at one time?) a 50 watt bulb offered by Explorer Express, but when goign to the website I couldn't find it in the list of goodies offered for my '02. So I created a new post.
I wouldnt be concerned with the bulbs getting hotter as I wouldn't think I would need to be in reverse for longer than a minute. In fact, in most cases I would say 30 seconds would be plenty.

This forum has far too many sections!!!

In the "Performance lighting" section, there are a few threads on the subject (when you serach for it), everything from just buying a higher wattage bulb from AutoZOne, all the way to wiring fog lights on the hitch/bumper.

I will figure out something and update this post with what I find/ do.

Could the Moderators please leave this thread in this section, as there seems to be different options for different years? (maybe?) I noticed a similar thread was moved from it's original section to the performance lighting section.

I'm running the Sylvania SilverStar bulbs for my back up lights and they are brighter than stock.

I found these on eBay and they're #%($# bright. I found these when thinking of ways to cool off the sockets. Incandescent/halogen fail. LED bulbs run cool. After trial and error, I found these. I did a search on eBay for "3156 white 68 smd" without the quotes, and ended up with a spaceship style of super white.

Here is the side, followed by the rear. These were taken by a crappy camera.

Here is what they look like. The first picture is factory lenses.
This one is my Altezza lenses, which make them a gazillion percent brighter, and you can see exactly what it looks like.
