broken gas gauge what should i do?

the float in the gas gauge is cracked i dont know this for certain but when i run the tank down the gauge starts to work for a couple minutes after filling up i an at college in auburn alabama and dont know of any reliable mechanics i was wondering if i should go to the dealer and have them fix it (yes yes i know it is like throwing your money away but there does not seem to be many choices) and i dont have time or tools to fix it my self. what would yall suggest?

fill it up, keep track of how many miles you have driven and fill her back up when it gets too low for you....that might not be much help, but thats just what i'd do.

If it's a float which it sounds like then I think any monkey could do the repair without messing anything up. In other words, a trip to the dealer to get isn't needed.
