Sorry to post this in an Explorer forum, but this seems to be where the expertise is on these transmissions.

I recently lost overdrive in my 5r55n transmission ('01 Lincoln LS8 code P0775). On going through the valve body I found the broken spring below. Does anyone know if this circuit relates to my problem? All pieces of the spring appear to be there. the end of the piston is a little beat up, but not on a sliding surface.
I originally was planning on replacing the solenoid block, but now I'm not sure it's necessary. Any thoughts?
Shifting in all other gears was smooth before disassembly, only 5th was gone.

Thanks!
Joe

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your post into its own thread with a new title. Which bore number is this from? It looks like the 3rd bore on the left side of the photo. If so, then AJ-3 should be the spring. Here's a link for a replacement spring: https://www.wittrans.com/SchematicParts.aspx?Transmission=5R55N/5R55S/5R55W&LinkCode=AJ-3. We don't have a rebuild thread on this valve body (yet). It would be very appreciated if you could make one. Here's a diagram of the valve body: https://www.wittrans.com/Schematic.aspx?Transmission=5R55N/5R55S/5R55W&Schematic=7

Thank you for the diagram, and the link! I'm not sure I am the guy for the rebuild thread. This is the first time I have had a transmission down this far. I'm a mechanically minded person, but I will need a couple under my belt before I am comfortable with them (let's hope I am never comfortable with them, lol!). Are there actually rebuild kits for this valve body? I'll have to check one of the other threads out to see what is involved. I do have a manual coming though, and I'm determined to not need another ATF shower.
As an aside, does anyone have a used solenoid block for this transmission? It doesn't have to work, all I need is the fluid temperature sensor. Got a little carried away with mine and damaged it (:palmtohead:). Maybe the manual will have the specs for it?

heh, unfortunately mine doesnt look so nice. damaged beyond recognition, got a bit careless with a screwdriver (at the time I planned to replace the unit). Maybe when my manual arrives it will tell me some specs on it.

ok, how about this... Does anyone have a pic of the temperature sensor on a 5r55e? (the one that is on the wiring harness). May be possible they are the same, and the harness is much cheaper.
Sorry for all the questions!

hmm. I think I will wait for my manual and see if there are any specs in it. If not I may just get a whole new block. Live and learn.

ok I really need help. Spring didnt fix it, put a new solenoid block in, still no fix. Same P0775 code. Manual says pinpoint D test, but all of those tests relate to the solenoid.
How long does it take to clear codes with the battery disconnected?
It still acts like its either not shifting into 5th, or torque converter isnt locking up.

BTW, what I thought I was buying was a remanufactured solenoid. After I received it, I looked again and it was 'rebuilt' 'tested'. Would think it would be a slim chance this one would throw the same code though.

Ok, there is no internal wiring harness on the 'N'.
I ended up buying a brand new solenoid pack to rule that out. Shifts are much better than they were with the rebuilt one (which is going back), but still same problem.
Here is what I know:

In D4 everything is fine, except there is no engine braking (rpm's fall to 1k after letting off throttle)
D5 will throw the code as soon as it tries to shift into 5th.

Manual mode:
Under acceleration in first, it doesn't act like its going to shift into 2nd. I let off and it will shift.
2nd 3rd and 4th are normal except their is no engine braking, the rpms drop down to idle letting off the throttle. to accelerate you have to bring the rpms up to match the current speed.

I think I am going to take it to the ford dealer on Friday. One thing that is interesting is the manual doesn't list anything hydraulic or mechanical as a concern for "no engine braking in all gears". It lists PCM and vehicle wiring harness and certain solenoids (which should be ruled out by now).

Problem solved. Just traded it in on a Grand prix GXP, lol. Value of that car was tanking too much to justify putting more money into it.
Thanks for the help though!
