Hello Folks, I have what I hope is an easy question to answer regarding a 2000 Explorer with a SOHC. For some crazy reason I was overcome with the urge to change the plugs and wires on the Explorer. I had previously read up on the subject and realized that this was going to be a royal pain but nevertheless I thought that I would start on the easy side. After an hour or so of pleading, crying, bleeding and taking the Lord's name in vain I was tightening the third plug (nearest the driver) when the wrench caught a line and ripped it out from whence it came.

The line is a thin white plastic line that is mainly wrapped in a corrugated black sleeve. The natural bend in it makes it flop between the ABS and the battery but an hour of fruitless searching has revealed exactly squat. I think that I have traced the other end back to a set of three lines that plug into the air manifold at the rear on the passenger side. When I start the engine I can hear air being sucked into the line so I am guessing that is where it ends.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

Dave

Try Google images of the motor to help out .. Sorry I can be more help but my other explorer is at the shop and can help out in the morning but most likely someone will beat me to it..
Also do you have any kind of book for your explorer??
Alright I look in my book and there should be a vaccum hose between the valve cover and intake that the white lines goes to...

Thank you for your reply. I have a Haynes manual which is about as much use as a paper teapot but I can see the line in question in your picture. It is directly below the large connector with the nut on it and heads south off the image which is where I need to know where it ends up.

Thank you for your reply and I am looking at position 4 on the picture

4. bottom left: (splits into three lines with two lines splitting again into two) fuel pressure damper, EGR vacuum regulator, evaporative emission canister purge valve, vacuum reservoir bulb below air filter enclosure

The mystery deepens as the line would appear to head in the general direction of the EVAP canister purge valve, however the valve only has two vapor lines and an electrical connection so I wonder if the original poster made a mistake with that.

On a positive side the car is running great with no CELs (as yet) so I wonder if I did break it or if it has been like this for years and was just lurking under the ABS. It was certainly very brittle and another inch snapped off just by touching it. Anyway I have taped it off to stop it sucking air but clearly Mr Ford wanted it there so I would like to reconnect it if I ever find out what it is.

Thanks
Dave

Evaporative emission canister purge valve

. . . The mystery deepens as the line would appear to head in the general direction of the EVAP canister purge valve, however the valve only has two vapor lines and an electrical connection so I wonder if the original poster made a mistake with that. . .

The EVAP canister purge valve is located above the fuel tank on my Sport. I suspect that is the disconnected hose. It runs under the 4WABS and then aft under the body. The fuel vapor management valve is located below the battery tray.

I think that is what you're referring to in your post. The hose to it comes from the lower front of the engine.

Ahh, that makes sense I was confusing those two items. I have already looked under the front and not found the broken hose so it looks like it might be easier to start at the back and trace it to the front. I am out and about all day but first thing Sunday I will get under the car and report back.

Many thanks to all who have replied.

EVAP canister purge valve hose

You should be able to see the EVAP canister purge valve hose by looking into the engine compartment. It may be the one in the photo below.

The vertical one below the brake master cylinder that turns forward and goes under the battery tray. When I added my supercharger I routed the hose from the plenum along the hose going to the master cylinder booster.

Well it's time for an update, albeit a sad one, I failed. I looked and looked for the elusive EVAP canister purge valve all to no avail. The lying Haynes manual says that it is on the left frame rail and I found the fuel lines and the fuel filter and a strange box that contains mercury but no purge valve and not a hint of the other end of the broken pipe.

Now you might be thinking that I am fault finding like a moron but I am quite handy with a screwdriver. I made my own smoke generator to diagnose a leaking lower inlet manifold gasket which I changed out. I mention this not to boast but just so you know I didn't give in at all easily.

Anyway the car runs beautifully with not a CEL in sight (so far) and fortunately I live in Bottomburp County Virginia were we spit on the environment and emissions testing. Out of idle curiosity I would like to know where this $%^&* thing is but for now I am going to suck on a Bud.
