Hello I know this is a ford web site but being that engines are all basiclly the same i thought i would ask.
My brother has a Chevy 350 engine in his boat today the termastat went out and the engine started to overheat and the water pump hose blew off.
He shut the engine off before it started getting to hot it got to about 220 Degrees Then he got towed to the harbor when he was there we changed the termastat and the engine had a hard time starting then it ran ok but when i check to oil i saw that it had water in it so i told him he might have blown the head gasket or cracked the head but when we got home and did a compresion test all the cyclinders had 150 psi compresion.

My qustion is could the head gasket be still be blown or is it leaking water some were else. Also this is a brand new engine with about 100 hours on it.
Were else could it be getting water from i know when the water pump blew off it shot water all over the engine.

THanks for the help

When the engine cooling jacket has been subjected to high pressure its not unusual to find that the head gasket has 'blown' between the water cooling jacket and one of the oil drain channels that drain oil from the valve gear back down to the sump. This of course leads to water in the sump oil. Dont know how you work out which head is causing the problem.
