Hey guys,

i got a little crazy today and tried to do a burnout on my 97 2wd X. I held the brake down enought to stop the X from moving and then slowly floored the gas pedal... all that happened though was that RPMs only went up to 2500 and stopped right there... all that while I was flooring the gas pedal. I actually managed to push my front tires while there were fully locked...but never smoked the tires. I know burnouts arent good for the car, but ould someone tell me whats going on..
thanx

Hmm what is your gear ratio? Since it's a 2WD, it's probably pretty high like 3.27 or 3.55, and it's gonna be tough to do. My truck came with 3.73's and when it had the stock tires it culd chirp them up pretty well from a start without having to power brake.

As for your problem...maybe it's just impossible to do with a high gear ratio??

Haha...mine has 4.10 LSD and I can chirp my tires pretty well. My truck can make awesome tire chirpings. It can also do very good pick ups.

The problem is a combination of your gear ratio and you torque converter. (I'm assuming you have an automatic). The gearing makes it impossible for you rear wheels to overcome the weight of your truck on them and the added braking. You torque converter is bleeding off your power because the rear wheels aren't moving.

try letting off the brake just a hair at a time until they spin, add a touch of bleach under each rear tire and look like John Force. It'll do it I promise!

EDIT: Oh yeah and have a friend take some pics so we can all see!

Yeah if all else fails, you can use bleach or ATF and smoke em for days, lol.

Alright you want to do a burnout with your ex. Here you go but the wheel all the way to the right and dont slowly floor it like you said in your post. you have to floor the damn thing and it is important that you turn to the right. While your going your little circle the tire will begin to lose traction. When the tire starts spinning at a good speed put a little pressure on the brake pedal until the explorer comes to a stop. You will then be sitting there in a cloud of white smoke.

I guarentee your ex will do it. If it doesnt then i will give you my adress and you can ship your ex and your keys to me becuase you shouldnt be driving.

I have driven many rentals in the past. I have yet to drive a car that can't smoke the tires. I have even had a Taurus 3.0 smoke the front tires at a standstill and sit there in the same spot until i decided to move.

was that with the e-brake on?
my friend did that with his neon (DOHC 16valve 4cyl)

Yes that is exactly how i did it. I was having difficulty doing it with that taurus so i drove to the steepest hill i could find. With most of the weight of the car transfering the the rear of the car i was able to sit there for a good 20 seconds before the car started making weird noises and i decided to release the e-brake.

I hope so, I'd be scared of a driver that couldn't sqeal 'em with a manual : )

I can usually get the tires to chirp if I try hard enough, and I've got the 4.0, but I've got 3.73's...It's funny when I do, because I never try to, I just do every once in awhile...it's like she's screaming at me to stop : P

Well, they've pretty much told you how, so I have nothing to add, but let us know how it goes!

Stop, put the truck in 1st, stand hard on the brake, and STOMP the pedal, nail it to the floor. Going slow on teh pedal doesnt work very good. ;) Thats what I do anyway, but not very often.

Another good reason for Carfax.com :)
Don't buy them rentals :)

You can make ANY front wheel drive spin it's wheels because of the weight transfer. Even a three cylinder Geo Metro could spin its wheels.

zensius .... You just repeated exactly what i said by saying every car can smoke the tires. Are you a parrot?

That'd be one impressive parrot. Not only can he type, but he could smoke the tires on a metro : D

I'm with Jefe, those AWD's are hard to chirp. I couldn't ever do it.

Hey Jefe ..... Hand over the keys and i will gladly try it out for you.

if you nail the gas, you shouldn't even move. your tires will spin really fast. i cant give much advice on this subject since i haven't driven an automatic since i was 16.

I tried that on my '97 in my driveway. I got two 1' long black strips from the rear tires before my engine bogged way down to the point of almost dieing as the fronts started trying to pull. It didn't work very well.
