Pulled out my head unit for some maintenance, and noticed an oddity on the console.

Here, the 3 buttons on the left have no purpose, they aren't even buttons, just a filler plate.

Then there is this.

The center "button" has a harness connected to it. Does anyone have any idea what it is, and why there's no button for it?

I believe it its for the Eddie Bower edition or the higher up model where the information center in the instrument cluster has 3 rows of digits. The three unused buttons would be for reset, info and setup. Instead of using the single button that the xlt has by the intrument cluster for changing what is displayed.

The reason for did this is so they did not have to make multiple wire harnesses.

Look at the picture below

So if I buy the buttons, I won't have to contort myself to use the button behind the steering wheel?

If you try it and it works, i might have to do the same thing. Always thought that button up by the guages was awkward to use and a stupid design.

I don't think it would work. I think you would also have to buy the instrument cluster along with the buttons. That instrument cluster does not have the button behind the steering wheel and has to work off the three separate buttons. But if you bought the buttons and instrument cluster then it would work for sure.

Correct. You'll need the 6L2T-10849-GA or GB instrument cluster to go along with the switches.

if you replace the cluster with one that does not match the options your truck will never start let alone ever be able to be programed to work .... the cluster is the security and you cant start the engine with one that does not match and ford has to reprogram the as built data for it to function... explorer and ST cluster are not interchangeable but 06 and 07 are the same but they need to match options like message center and or navigation ... my cluster is fried and it has been a nightmare trying to get this issue fixed.... and I cant find any info on what ford charges for a reprogram and nobody can change the odometer.... hell these trucks cant even start if you take the cluster out to send it in to be serviced or cloned ....
