Hi, I'm looking at buying my first Explorer. It's a 2004 V6 XLT 4x4 with tow package. It has 106xxx miles and seems to be in pretty good shape. Are there any common problems I should look for? Are there any major service items that I should be aware of?

Thanks,
Chris

Where to begin. The 4.0 is known for timing chain issues. So if there are service records for the truck that would be a good thing to look over. Wheel bearings, ball joints, rear coil springs breaking are all common issues. Have a reputable shop look it over.

If it has been used for towing I would be very wary of that many miles on an Explorer tranny. Heck, even if it hasn't been used for towing, I would be wary. Check the maintenance records.

Thanks. I have it in the shop now. They're going to give it a good inspection. Should hear back from them any time now.
I don't know if it has been used for towing or not.

Update

Well, I bought it. There were a couple minor things that have been fixed.
Needed left front wheel bearing, serpentine belt and idler pully, oil change, tire rotation and alignment. I also put new spark plugs in it and new wiper blades. I think I got a pretty fair deal on a decent ol' truck. Now it's time to start making it mine. :)

Congrats on your purchase and welcome aboard. :salute: Nice looking X you got there! :biggthump

Thanks!

Tomorrow, it gets new speakers and maybe a radio. I can't wait to put bigger tires on it but these still have some life left in them so maybe next year.

I'd like to pull the running boards off but they're handy for the kids to climb in.

I would do a fuel filter also.

Doesnt look like you did too bad.

Keep us updated.
