buying trans

do you all think that it would be cheaper to buy a new trans or just have my old one rebuilt.....i know nothing about these, how hard are they to put in? should i take it to someone who knows what they are doing or just take a stab at it myself? where is a good place to buy one and what kind would work for my 93' explorer 4x4.....i am having the same problem that i have seen a few times on here, not shifting when accelerating until a higher gear. and my overdrive is also kicking on and off at higher speeds like 50-70....what all could be causing this......should i try and fix just one thing or replace all

Acutally, Buy a new transmission. Or Rebuild your A4LD yourself using all new parts. Most transmission shops only rebuild the parts that are bad inside your transmission. (and still charge you $1,500) and therefore they only last 10,000 miles after rebuild.

I just pulled one out

Not hard, not easy. I think it has more to do with the logistics of having the time and place to work. I had one rebuilt a few years ago and it didn't last too long - It was a cheap job. Most times the only new parts you get are the seals and the hard parts that are absolutely bad (not just worn). I'm rebuilding my own now and have found 5 mistakes the last rebuilder did. Four were major, like leaving out clutch plates! I will sell a car before I have someone else rebuild it. The good news is taking out the transmission is the hardest part. Working on an A4LD is really quite easy, doesn't take special tools, quick, and is quite cheap. If you are so inclined, I would go to a junkyard and ask for an Explorer pull out that is bad. Should be able to get it cheap for less than a core charge. Get a manual and rebuild it at your leisure when you can study it without pressure. 99% of the time you can do the rebuild for only about $120. Then you can do a quick swap. And when you are the expert, you can rebuild the other one and sell it. Problem solved and money in your pocket.

You need to buy an ATSG manual $16, filter $10, and basic seal kit $27. All other parts are extra and you can do a repair of just what is bad or go whole hog. Many bands and clutches show very little wear. A little research and you will see just how iffy a rebuild can be. If you are not climbing over rocks, you don't have to go crazy with parts. Order the basic stuff and then tear down and examine parts for a second order. I buy from a local distributor but www.bulkpart.com site is very neophite friendly and reasonable. Post questions on the other thread. I hate to see it being berried back so far.
