It just makes sense to get one up in good mechanical shape that we use daily. I am glad to see you asking this. A lot of people just want to mod one first thing and dont realize maintenance can save your life.
All the fluids everywhere should be raplaced. On an older vehicle you do not know the maintenance that was or was not done. Transmission fluid/filter, rear axle lube, if 4X4 both the t-case and front axle lube. Antifreeze. All the drive belts and hoses (radiator, heater, etc) Definately go over the brake system. That can get you killed if its not in good shape. There really is a lot that should be done when buying a used car, especially an older one.
I recently bought my '01 X and it does not have high miles, but I am still changing out some of the fluids and so forth. Its just a smart thing to do. I will go through the brake system sometime in the next few weeks. They work fine, but I want to inspect it all with my own eyes.
There is also a great search feature built into this site. It has been very helpful to me. Scroll up and its on the lower portion of the bar. Third from the left. You cannot imagine the ammount of information you can find with it.
