So we're taking my son-in-laws '97 Sport of the road. Our original intention when we bought it was to get 2 years out if it and he's gotten 3. He was planning on buying my 2000 Explorer XLT (aka "the spare truck") but my other daughter had mentioned she was going to be getting rid of her 2000 Mountaineer AWD soon. The Mountaineer has 70,000 fewer miles, 4 brand new tires, a brand new battery, a recently replaced fuel pump, new driver's front window regulator and a recently rebuilt front drive shaft CV. So I convinced him to buy her Monty. My daughter only wanted to recoup the money she's put in it lately, so she sold it to us for $650. I told my son-in-law that she wanted $1000 so I'd have a reserve of cash to do whatever repairs might be necessary (ball joints, wheel alignment, pulley bearings and such). My son-in-law still managed to save $500 over what I wanted for my XLT and probably quite a bit more over a CL vehicle with unknown problems, so he's happy.

Then I decided to stick my XLT on CL to see what level of interest there was in it at $1700. As I've been driving my ST since last spring. From the responses I getting I think I should have asked $2000 for it, but I'll be happy with $1700 (I only paid $1500 for the XLT 2.5 years ago, of course I've put quite a bit of work in it and maybe $200 in parts since, but we've put over 10,000 miles too.

What's surprising me is that 2 of the people who seem really hot for the XLT live over 4 hours away. There must be a shortage in used V8 Explorers outside of the Atlanta area... ?

Anyway, with luck, I should have it sold for my asking price by later this afternoon.

Update: XLT Sold 30 minutes ago for full asking price.

Anyone want a clapped out '97 Sport?

What color interior on the sport? How roached is the interior?

The V8s are getting harder to find. Im seeing alot of them at the junkyards with the intakes and heads taken off. A lot of people are buying them for the motors

Body is a dark greenish blue w/grey trim and is in decent shape with no major dents/dings, roof paint is sun toasted, no rust (southern vehicle) the interior is grey cloth and is pretty bad, driver's seat foam is badly deteriorated, passenger seat is not too bad, rear seat is pretty decent, door arm rests are badly deteriorated, center arm is rest broken, carpeting is a total mess, the interior smells like an ashtray, all plastic parts are in good condition for their age. SOHC engine is currently running rough but with no timing chain noise (was rebuilt at some point by PO) I know it needs intake O-rings, water pump is new, trans works okay, rear end is okay (3:73 open) tires are bald, windshield is cracked, very nice 15" 5-spoke OE chrome wheels, 3rd brake light was converted to LED, fuel pump was new 10 months ago.

PM me if you want/need something.

Finding a V8 here is next to heck on Earth, I've kept my 154K donor intact for that reason, decided to find a V6 and V8 swap it. As for your 2 door, what's the full asking price? It's got a title, something a lot of them don't at this point

Yes it has a title. I'll have to do some research and get back to you on a price for the 2 dr. In the meantime, feel free to make an offer.

It's worth keeping intact then, that's my number one problem with a body, and it'd be worth posting on here, people who love 2 doors would love it.

Other than the paint on the roof, the body is actually very good. I'll come up with a fair price for what it is and let you know. Kinda busy with the AWD Monty this week.

In looking at my local CL I see only 1 '97 Sport for sale. It looks fairly clean for its age (way cleaner than mine) and it has about 100k fewer miles on it. The guy is asking $1,999 (which I think is way overpriced and the CEL appears to be on).

In my opinion a decent '97 Sport is worth maybe around $1000-$1200 tops, unless it's exceptional. Mine was in better than average condition 3 years ago, but now is below average condition. With DIY labor and used parts I think you could resuscitate my Sport for around $400 bucks and I believe the drive train is sound. So I think a fair price for it would be around $500. I have zero interest in doing anything with this vehicle.

I wish you were closer. I'd love to find a spare sohc engine with no timing chain issues

Here in northwest NJ the 2nd gen models are disappearing fast. I hardly ever see a 1st gen truck on the roads. Most of the 2nd gen trucks left are either in really bad shape and are on their 3rd or 4th owners or they are nice ones that has been taken care of. The generous use of salt and grit here in the winter months really takes a toll on vehicles. If I had room and lots of money I can imagine what I'd have parked outside.
