So we're taking my son-in-laws '97 Sport of the road. Our original intention when we bought it was to get 2 years out if it and he's gotten 3. He was planning on buying my 2000 Explorer XLT (aka "the spare truck") but my other daughter had mentioned she was going to be getting rid of her 2000 Mountaineer AWD soon. The Mountaineer has 70,000 fewer miles, 4 brand new tires, a brand new battery, a recently replaced fuel pump, new driver's front window regulator and a recently rebuilt front drive shaft CV. So I convinced him to buy her Monty. My daughter only wanted to recoup the money she's put in it lately, so she sold it to us for $650. I told my son-in-law that she wanted $1000 so I'd have a reserve of cash to do whatever repairs might be necessary (ball joints, wheel alignment, pulley bearings and such). My son-in-law still managed to save $500 over what I wanted for my XLT and probably quite a bit more over a CL vehicle with unknown problems, so he's happy.
Then I decided to stick my XLT on CL to see what level of interest there was in it at $1700. As I've been driving my ST since last spring. From the responses I getting I think I should have asked $2000 for it, but I'll be happy with $1700 (I only paid $1500 for the XLT 2.5 years ago, of course I've put quite a bit of work in it and maybe $200 in parts since, but we've put over 10,000 miles too.
What's surprising me is that 2 of the people who seem really hot for the XLT live over 4 hours away. There must be a shortage in used V8 Explorers outside of the Atlanta area... ?
Anyway, with luck, I should have it sold for my asking price by later this afternoon.
Update: XLT Sold 30 minutes ago for full asking price.
Anyone want a clapped out '97 Sport?
