its crap... it wont happen....... it hasnt, nor will it... look what all the politicians drive.... i bet the majority of them are escalades, yukons, navigators, thing like that....

CA can't afford to pay attention let alone ban SUV's. They blame SUV's for poor fuel economy yet Sacramento gets $.39 per gal in TAX. Something tells me that they should be begging us to buy SUV's.

for real and that makes me mad cause i have 2 friends with trucks that get worse gas milage than i do

Yeah, but a truck is different than an SUV. The term "SUV" is trendy and easy to blame. On the news when something happens in an SUV they always make sure to call it one. It's never a car, or vehicle. It's an SUV. One of the managers at work said"C'mon nobody really needs an SUV, do they? " I said "Sure, I do. I live where 8 inches of snow overnight is very commmon, I can fit a 4x8 sheet in the back, and am constantly hualing things. Oh, and I get at least 18mpg. What kind of milage does your extended Safari van get?" His responce was" uh, well, um not bad"

actually i think this is only half the story....its a preposed ban on SUV as fleet vechiles....which i believe are things such as company cars, police cars, things that get driven very very much.

so calm down i don't think they can ban your free will on buying any car..but they can tax the hell out of you for buying one they don't like

California has banned cars already so what else is new?? I heard this has changed, but I'm not positive. I do know that you weren't allowed to register a VW TDI in California or New Jersey even though it had the CA emissions sticker under the hood.

I've seen some TDI's driving around with CA plates, so I don't think that is true. Also, they had one for sale at the Sac VW dealer when we were there two weeks ago (we are car shopping for GF)

I wouldn't worry about them banning SUVs in CA -- we probably have more than any other state (we have more cars than any other state).

I think that the proposal is to ban using SUVs as state vehicles except when they are specifically needed (law enforcement, state park rangers, etc). I don't think that it is anything but a proposal yet.

I'm in favor of this - I think that the state workers should be driving Geo Metros unless they can justify a larger vehicle -- I'm helping to pay for the gas with my taxes;)

I dont believe TDI's are banned in NJ I see new ones around all the time. I'm not sure what theyre whining about as far as deisel's anyway. they run alot cleaner than gasoline engines. You can get like 60+mpg out a TDI or any or deisel powered car.

They must have changed the rulings. You could not get a 2000 or 2001 TDI in CA. I don't know when they decided to open it up '02 or '03.

whats a vw tdi? is that for a turboed direct injectioned diesel? like rick's golf?

I found this on the FAQ page for www.tdiclub.com:

California and New York issues - The state of California places limits on the "fleet average" emissions of auto manufacturers. Currently, a manufacturer can only sell a certain proportion of "Tier 1" vehicles in relation to the number of "LEV" or low-emission vehicles. Certain other states have copied the California legislation. Volkswagen has stated that the withdrawal from sale of 2000-model TDI vehicles from certain states is due to these reasons. Furthermore, California has declared diesel exhaust to be a toxic air contaminant, although other studies dispute this conclusion. The situation in New York is the same.

The link is http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-5.html

Apparently, the situation changed from 2000 to now.

Relax guys. California has not proposed a ban on SUV's or planning on placing any restriction on any private person's right to buy one. The news was an assembly woman thought the STATE should not buy gas guzzling SUV's for the STATE workers to drive. Nothing less, nothing more.

Nothing like a mis stated rumor to get every one's juices flowing.

Happy Exploring, in CA too...
Chris
