Hi gang this is only my second post, but I have recieved such a wealth of information from you all that I thought I'd ask for more. I have a 94 EB Explorer,4-door,auto, 4 X 4, 116k. I was putting money aside to have the tranny rebuilt or replaced( it's dead).
I just recieved a job offer from out west. The question for anyone that may have gone thru this. Should I expect any problems passing the Ca. smog requirements. I'm In Pennsylvania and we have an emmissions and saftey inspection every year, which it has always passed.
Thanks

No. I think virtually all 94 Explorers were CA emissions compliant. (Don't take this to the bank, but don;t expect a problem.)

I brought my 96 X from Canada to San Diego and I had no problems at all. They did the visual and ran it through the smog machine and passed perfectly they said.

you shouldnt have any problem as its an out of state vehicle... CA has special requirements, but i think they get waived if the vehicle gets registered here from out of state...

Cool, thanks for the help. I really didn't want to have to shop for a new vehicle
once I got there. More comfortable with my own X.

What he said...

I believe that the clincher is when you go to register it the SECOND time around....As I recall (Been a few years) The code requires "Calif. residents" (which you are the second time around) vehicles to be smog compliant, ie: have a smog pump and rail. Further it (The code) used to forbid you to "alter" the engine by putting these parts on.....Like I said, It's been a few years, so it may have changed. I was 'forced' to buy a Calif. emissions equipped' vehicle when I lived there. (San Diego)
Maybe someone out there could call DMV for you to make sure (?)
Mctoy

PS: Forgot to say that my truck PASSED emissions testing, but did not have the required equipment and so FAILED!!!

Am not certain about your 94 but would almost bet you have all the smog equip you need for our state.
All the sporttracs are built in the same factory, all have the same smog equip mandated by the feds.
The only extra you get to be Calif emissions compliant is a decal that states so

Be very carefull to check to make sure that ALL factory engine parts are on and working properly. When I left the military I moved to Ca. with my wife. First the wanted :( $500bucks because in my Mustang GT was an 88 and mine was a 49 state legal one  . Then took a trip to the Imissions station(not before I was pulled over and told that NO (unless factory) window tint was allowed on the front windows. So after scraping my tint off my prized baby on the side of the road. The inspection station hooked up wires to my car in places I didn't know she had. He proceded to tell my that my timing was to high(which actaully helped it run better), my cats. were not there(which it still passed smog like a brand new car), and a whole list of nit picky crap. :fire:
Hope my experince doesn't scare you. After that I ended up moving back home Where all they want to know is your current mileage. :D

Coonash
Did you remove your cats? as I said above, if your ex is intact as it was built, should not be a problem

Sure I removed them. When I raced the car the car in Florida they just got in the way ;) . But the point is sometimes after a while you can forget about all the little things you have done.
