We have a 2000 4.0 OHV Ranger. Ordered a used engine with 57,000 miles, got it in, it looks like it came out of a 97 but we changed sensors etc. over. Had to order new cam synch as 97 engine had a 3wire connector and 2000 has 2. Got everything in, only problem is canNOT get timing of cam synchronizer right. Have 2 install tools which are supposedly both for the 2000 4.0 push rod engine, BUT one puts the flag in the middle of the window and the other has it slightly to one side, so clearly both cannot be right. Does anyone know which is correct? Right now hubby is trying the 'move the flag a hair clockwise each time and see how it runs' trial and error method and it is NOT going well! A couple times have gotten it where it runs decent but after about 40 seconds it starts spitting through the exhaust intermittent.y (thumping noise).
