Can I do this repair myself?

I have a 1993 4dr XLT, but it has some transmission problems. What I think has happened is the throw-out bearing has gone bad (again, *sigh*), and consequently fubared a gear or two. Now I called around and it would be upwards of $1000 to get this fixed with labor. Can I purchase the gears for the transmission and just replace them and the throw-out bearing myself? I would have help, a bunch of my friends are car guys. So, is it theoretically possible? Or would I be guaranteed to fsck something up? Thanks! BTW, it is a 5-speed manual, and yes, I hate any and all things Mazda because of this damned transmission.

I would not do it unless you or one of your buddies knoes excatly what you are doing,there are special kinds of tools you need to work on trannys.Have you tried a junkyard?

Now if a gear or two is really flubbed look to get it rebuilt by a professional or search the junkyards (can be sketchy). I just replaced my throwout bearing, slave cylinder, pressure plate, pilot bearing and clutch last weekend. It was a PITA, especially since I was doing it on my own, but I don't think I'd ever open one of those things up.

If you want to save some cash, you could probally take it out yourself and bring it to a tranny shop. That would save you a few hours in labor charges. Make sure you bring it to them first so they can tell you exactly whats wrong and then just bring the tranny back to them the next day already out of the truck.

Once you got the tranny out and fixed, might as well replace the clutch and all the stuff I said I did above. The parts are cheap from NAPA, and the hardest part of doing it all is just getting the tranny out and back in again.

What exactly does it feel like when you're shifting? if its just hard shifting into first and reverse, that would probally be a slave cylinder problem.

Well here's what happened. I was driving down the road and was about to shift into second after leaving a light and in the process of shifting the transmsiision just went CRUNCH and made all kinda of nasty grinding metal broken part sounds. This same thing happened when the throw-out bearing went out last time. When ever we run the truck and let the clutch out, even in neutral, you can hear gear teeth rattling around inside the casing. The car is pretty beat up looks wise, so it no longer has enough resale value in it to make getting it professionally fixed again, so my Dad said my friends and I could give it a try.
