The 4.6 is too wide for 2nd gen Explorers. Your best V8 swap is a 5.0 from an Explorer or Mountaineer.

Is this Sam?

I would just do the 5.0 V8 FROM explorers lol so you know it'd fit, plus that tranny is a BEAST and is so much stronger than the V6 tranny

i dont think the 5.0 l are stronger then the newer 4.6l my 4.0 SOHC i have now is stronger then the old 5.0 i smoked a 5.0 mountaineer off by a mile, and plus i floored a 2005 mountaineer they are god damn slow. i liek the 4.6 you floor them engines they take off liek a rocket.

wow i dont know what you are talkin about. the 5.0 make plinty of power. i have factory gears <3.73> on 35" and i can roast my tires. and the 5.0 swop bolts right in easy as pie. the only custon part i can think of a rear drive shaft because you have a sport. a little intake work and i nice exaust and u are good as gold. also to put a 4.6 in will be alot of work time and most of all money

the SOHC has the Horse Power numbers, but it still has the weaker trans

the 5.0 has an F-150 block with mustang heads and intake, it has the torque advantage over the SOHC and more than enough Horse Power. more importantly, it has a transmission from the F-150

so basically the 5.0 explorer's are so nice not because of the off the line power, but more because they have a 1/2 TON drive line in a 1/4 TON truck.

The F-150 came out 7 years after the 302ci. :p:

My engine has 210 HP with 240 pounds per foot torque i want to upp it to 275-300 HP if not oh well i will leave it as it is. It has plenty of punch it to the floor power but i want it to have the 4.6's HP and torque range.

all i did to it was add a K&N filter gave me little bit more power.

any suggestions on the computer chip or cold air (filter systems)?

You're absolutely not going to gain 65HP+ in that vehicle with an intake and computer chip. Do yourself a favor, plan out your goals very specifically, figure out the costs and start saving. You'll SAVE money by not throwing random parts at it hoping to add a few ponies here and there and then realizing you're still not happy with it's performance.

That said, if you're after speed... you might opt for a sports car instead

My .02 cents anyway.

I know it's 2 years gone by, but I can't let this go without saying...

The 5.0 explorer motor is a BEAST!!!

I hear the "gt40" version is good, but i'm talking about the "gt40-P" version. the cam that comes in it is LAME; it makes the stock 5.0 HO mustang cam look radical, and that one is done for by 5000 prm. but it's roller-cammed, so you change it out to an emmissions-legal Ford racing E303 cam,, and a set of roller rockers, plus a mild valvespring/retainer kit. Finish with headers, cai, pulleys, and a 65 or 70mm throttle, and you've got 300 HP, 330 peak torque, and - most importantly - a broad torque curve that is above 300 all the way from 3500 to 5500 rpm, and good pull well past 6000.

it was also emissions legal with longtubes and high-glow cats, got better gas mileage than stock, and had excellent drivability - advantages of a broad torque curve. it takes aftermarket headers, pullies, rockers, and cam - BUT , for a 5.0 those parts are cheap and plentiful, and with the "p" heads and 1.7 rollered E303,, it's a torque monster!
