That's strange that your OHV has 4 cats, you sure? The OHV should have 2 inline, the SOHC should have 2 inline or parallel, and the 5.0 has 4.

Anyway, taking the last 2 off should be ok, but you will pollute more. The fact about Ford cats is that they're not really restrictive. And the amount that they do restrict provides the right amount of backpressure to maintain lowend torque.

YEAP 4!

There's 2 right after the exsaust manafold the driver side does a 45 and then another after got a weird shape to it. goes in normal, but it comes out on the corner (hard to discribe) the pass. just normal short cat. then another out both sides about a foot from where the first set let out. then they go back to muffler.
I think the one rattleing is up on pass side..

O yeah and y the hell does my fiance's sport w/ sohc have her cat's so close to the trans.? one is under the pan and the other is on pass side.

Can you take a picture of your cats? And you're sure you have the 4.0L OHV V6, and not the 5.0L OHV V8?

Yeah, the SOHC cat for the driver's side is in a stupid place. Great for smashing when wheeling. Trust me, I know. :(

Trust me it's a 4.0 ohv

my fiance sohc can run circles around it. Iknow the difference between 6 and an 8 trust me! I grew up with Boss 302'S! I'll try take a pic. It may be awhile though. I thought this was common, and all were this way! It' factory though, only Ford could screw it up this good. :p

Technically, in California, you can't.

http://165.235.17.9/StdPage.asp?Body=/Geninfo/Factsheets/Parts_Locator-Apr_2001.htm

You are supposed to replace emission control equipment with equivalent parts. If you can't find equivalent parts the BAR (bureau of auto repair) will help you find them. If they can't locate them, then they MAY approve substitute parts. If you get caught using incorrect parts, they can require you to replace the original parts in order to pass the visual inspection and therefore register your truck.

In reality, as long as the cats are working, they probably won't notice but if they realize that you removed some of them, you could fail the visual inspection.

what does it come with though?

does everybody have only 2 and got in odd bird with 4 or is it a cal. thing? she has to smog in jan or feb for first time
