i got a car cell phone charger. and i just dont' like it hanging out of the ashtray all the time.

i was wondering if i could cut the cig. lighter plug in and hard wire it .

to what i see its just like a radar dector or neons , and you can hard wire thoses.

any info is helpful
thanks

Yep you can do that no problem. But be sure if you are chargin your phone and have something else plugged into the cigarette lighter that you don't exceed 10 amps or so.

i probably won't use the power from the cigarette lighter ....i'll get it from somewhere eles so that sholdn't be a problem.

is that what your talking about?

Yep.

I'll probably get around to doing the same thing as well someday.

do i have to wire a switch?
or it will only draw power when a phone is plugged into it?

it will only draw when something is plugged in causing draw

that's a sweet idea. i'll be getting a new cell for x-mas so i think i'll do that! where do you think i ould get power? run from the battery?

I personally would take the power right from the cigarette lighter.don't forget an inline fuse.

the reason I say that is the power consumed by the cell charger would be minimal

check out what i did (you may want to do the same) if you look at my pics you'll see this as well.

i have a power inverter hard wired and mounted in the back of the truck and wired so that i have three outlets up in the front mounted out of site on the passenger side of the center console. then from there i have my in home phone charger plugged in (this leaves two open outlets for use later) then i have that charger/holder mounted in my now gutted ashtray. this way you solve the problem of having the dumb thing plugged in and you solve the problem of not having a good place for your cell phone in your car.

i already split into the cig. lighter for a CB. will it still have enought power if i just run one at a time or wil i blow the fuse if all 3 are running at one time?

My cell AC charger indicates an amp output of .35 amp. With that little amount of draw, you could get power from anywhere. And yes, put an inline fuse in there. If you pull apart the cig plug, there should be a fuse in there. I would install one with the same rating.

Off topic. Perfect time for a PM buddy.

Digger, running other stuff off the same circuit as your CB can cause interference, but if you just run the CB off that without anything plugged in you'll be fine.

For all you other phone plugger people: be aware that some phone chargers have transistors or transformers in the plug which changes the current to the phone (not 12V). So make sure your phone takes a straight 12V. If not, you can't directly wire it in without a "thingy".

Good point Alec. My AC charger also indicates an output Voltage of 3.75. I am pretty sure there is something inside my car charger plug knocking the voltage down to somewhere around that. If I were to do this project, I would go into the cig plug and tap two wires off of the car side of whatever is in there and run those to a 12+ and ground. That way you have all the voltage dropping circuitry needed and a fuse inline.

How often do you NEED to use a charger in the truck?

I use my phone for business and use it a lot and only once have had to plug in the power cord to the lighter.

i use the charger very often...

i would do an inverter , but as some folks know. Inverter + Sound System= Noise

i'll just get power from somewhere
no switch
inline fuse and bam done

inverter done right plus sound system does not equal noise. and i was even able to mount it right next to my amps with no problems at all!
