Can I install an overhead console in a 96 XLT?

I just bought my 16 year old son his first car. It's a 96 XLT in near perfect condition. Paint is flawless Ann not a dent anywhere in the body. Interior is clean and like new. Anyhow, I want to upgrade some things to make it that much more special. One of the things I was thinking about is adding an overhead console. Can this be done on an XLT. Are the wires already in the roof. If not, is there a way to add this?

Do a search. I know there are threads on this, a couple with photos. I know it's possible and guys on here have added the overhead console in Sport Tracs, and no doubt Explorers, that didn't come with them. I don't remember the answer to your question about wiring. I think the mounting holes are there, you just have to cut the headliner to get to them. One part that gets overlooked by people doing this is the cigar shaped temp sender behind the grille that sends the outside temp to the overhead console.

Maybe you're being too specific in your search. '95-01 Explorers, '01-05 Sport Tracs, and '01-03 Explorer Sports are the same basic vehicle. Doing an "advanced search" for "overhead console" brings up 26 pages. Not all apply of course. Here are a few I found that will be helpful.
