Well, my buddy works at discount auto, and we were talking about changing my front and rear differential cover then paint at the same time. But they do not have and cannot even get a gasket for the front 10 bolt cover? then we called ford and they said that even they do not make one?? WTF??? they said to use some gasket paste crap?

So do I need a front gasket or not?

thanks Charlie

I would think you would a gasket if you're going to change the covers out. Do you have a CarQuest anywhere near you? They're awesome where I live. I get everything from them that's not aftermarket. They always order what I need and get it in within a day or so. They have everything. Good luck!

no we do not have a carquest, near here. but why would ford say i do not need one?

Use Black RTV, Thats what ford uses OEM

Comes in a tube, is a silicone derivitive, make sure any oils and old RTV is cleaned off the diff cover and diff, I use lacquer thinner, make sure the bolts are clean and de-greased also the threaded hole they go into, use RTV on the bolts also.

Definitley use RTV, if you do a search for the rear differential cover, there are numerous threads and posts about gaskets vs RTV. You can purchase a gasket for the 8.8, but general thought is to NOT use a gasket, and use RTV instead. I use RTV routinely, from differential covers to my lower intake manifold, and have had excellent results with the Permatex Blue RTV.

Just make sure the surface is clean, your bead is large enough to ooze a little (but not too much), and you let it set up for about 10min before placing the mating part over the bead.

RTV is pretty good stuff. We used it on my bro's cheby, he had a bad leak from the oil pan and after trying to get the pan down (had to drop the entire front axle) we used RTV to seal it up the best we could. Doesn't leak at all :)

Good Luck

yeah only silicone is required for a seal,

but if you want you could buy some cork sheets and make your own gasket and just use gasket maker as a dressing, i think that would seal pretty damn good
