I'm planing on getting an Explorer Sport pretty soon and I was just wondering if it is possible to have a fast explorer and make it have the balls for offroading. I know if you get bigger tires it takes away the acceleration and stuff like that... Can you have the best of both worlds? btw, im a newbie, dont make fun of me please hehe :p

Sure, put a supercharger on your 4.0, or cram a 5.0 in there and it will do well on and off-road. Remember though that the more torque you have the more often you will be breaking other things, diffs, trannys, u-joints etc.

HE HE HE

Skid plates are a good start THICK SKID PLATES carbon steel would be best, Double shocks front and back, Strip out any thing that is not welded down, Roll bar!!! very important oh yesss just do a search on rolled explorers:D Try a james duff 2.5" lift Then get a set of 30"/14" tsl boggers that ought to push out your wheel base then swap in a V-8 like oaknut's beacause........
not saying you would do this but some people who fix up vehicles for street drive like idots off-road and the other way around........
OOPS was i ranting? If you want a good all around SUV a sport is great!!! Start with the exhaust, K&N filter, small lift like a James Duff 2.5",and some shiney rims:D you decide, Come to think about it maybe i should have bought a sport?!?!

Yes, an X can be quick and offroad worthy at the same time. If you look around the site, you'll see that my Explorer is one of the fastest out there (at least with a V6) and is 2wd and still stock height. I went to Moab this weekend and survived all of the "stocker" trails with little trouble. Look at the post-Moab threads for details and pics. While it is only 2wd, I do have an Eaton posi in the back which greatly helps both on and offroad. 31" tires and a slight lift are next!

prerunner

There is a type of offroad truck called a "prerunner" and prerunners are designed to go pretty fast, generally. Many prerunners are 2WD and have high gear ratios but they also have heavy duty suspension. If you were doing that to an Explorer you would probably want a dual shock setup in the front, among other things. I think a few ppl here have a prerunner Explorer.
