Is it possible to roll start an automatic transmission vehicle. I've been told that you can't. Anyone have experience doing this?

Thanks,
mikeh

And the burn't and replaced clutches that go with it! :)

bah, you can keep your "man"ual trannies...unless we're talking about corvettes or somthin...

I heard that!!

It Depends!

Actually Yes!! . . . I once had a '60 Chevy Impala, 283 V8 with an automatic tranny. I could and did roll start it. Would turn ignition on, roll in N until about 10 or 15 MPH, and then drop it into L ... viola' it would start! :D Don't know if it screwed up the tranny. I wouldn't try it with my '97, though. :smoke:

It is a maybe.. Just not in an X.. for sure..

If I remember correctly the key is where the oil pump is.. if its at the rear of the tranny you can.. but last I heard, no one still make an auto tranny you can do that with..

The tranny on our 1963 Galaxie can be push started.. (you have to get to 30 mph... I've done it once..and dont' want to do it again)..

That's still cheaper than a al4d rebuild and the expensive fluid and filter changes. I can replace a clutch at home over the weekend for around $150. If you don't ride the clutch, you can easily get over 100k on one. I got over 200k out of the clutch in my escort (the throw-out bearing went bad, the clutch still had some meat on it).

I`m with the "can" guys

BUT

you have to go fast!

I only tried it with an old Ford Comet I had. I coasted downhill in neutral and turned the ignition to "on" then just put it in drive and it started running. I was doing 25 mph at the time.

I think you have to go so fast to get the torque converter spinning enough?

Ive tried in my ex just for the hell of it, cause i was bored. I was going down a hill at around 40, put the gear selector in N, and turned off the key. I turned it back to on, and pulled it into D, then into 1. Nothing happened. It kept rolling like i was still in neutral.

Thanks for being a geinea pig. Glad nothing broke. I guess that's a NO for you AUTO guys.

I asked a mechanic friend why.. and I did remember right.. it depends on where the pump is.. if the pump is at the rear of the tranny you can roll start it.. (may not be good for the tranny, and you may need lots of speed but it will turn the motor)..

most current trannies (he couldn't think of any that didn't) have the pump up front and driven from the motor.. so if the motor isn't turning.. but the driveshaft is.. you won't roll start.. no pump pressure so the driveshsaft turning won't in turn, turn the motor..
