Car sometimes won't start in park has to be in neutral?

I just got this car and thought it was a battery starter issue. It will start in neutral when it won't start cranking in park. What is the problem the neutral safety switch or a transmission, ignition issue? Thanks.

My guess would be your neutral safety switch. My first car was an old Mercedes 300D that ended having a similar issue. I had to hold the shifter between park and reverse or between neutral and drive in order to start it. Turned out to be the neutral safety switch.
