Are you wanting to put a carb setup in the ex?

I'm assuming the stroker he built has a carb, so he's asking how he should go about putting the carbed stroker into an explorer.

OP, what motor is this? 302? 351?

That would be simple, couldn't use the original trans without an aftermarket controller. But other than that a fuel pressure regulator with a return line and what ever controls needed for the ignition of choice and wiring.

Or... Put an FI intake on it and go with modern controls.

Thanks you for the info I was gonna stivk with carb cuz its cheaper and a lot simpler. Has anyone happened to put a c4 tranny in an explorer and did it fit relatively well or did you have to do some finagling with the support

Its. 302 stroked to a 349 so it should bolt right in hopefully without to much hastle

Why use a c4? A little weak for a stroked 302 imho. I think there's an adapter to make the 700 bolt up to a 302. What kinda work have you done to this motor? Besides, why ruin a strong motor with an auto? :D put a stick behind that beast

Honestly it'd probably be just as much work to make FI work. What year is this motor? Does it have all the emissions crap on it?

yeah, not much to say. i would run a aod though.....total bolt in.

i would replace the pump with a low pressure unit from a gen one model, maybe hook it to a relay through a oil pressure switch. depending what setup you end up with you may have to mod the stock sender unit to work with the lp pump, but its easy to do.

run the oem sploder fead and it will be cake.....save for some dash lights to kill.

And what exactly is your plan for the instrument cluster?

I can't understand why you wouldn't just want to go to a junk yard, pull an intake from a 5.0 explorer (you know they have damn good intakes, right?), and a couple other minor parts, then send out for a tune. FI is more reliable, efficient, makes more power, doesn't get starved for fuel when you are on steep inclines, and it has less parts, which means less failure points. As a bonus, you have a computer that is MADE for one purpose only, making your car run, that can help you figure out why it doesn't run. IMHO, that is a lot better than running all the gauges that I would use to properly tune a carburated engine, and you don't have to adjust your tune for seasons or conditions. Plus, no tranny worries then. Stock 5.0 tranny holds up pretty damn well, and it plugs right into the 5.0 harness. Electronic ignition too. Much more reliable than a distributor, ECU will adjust your timing for you.

Though, if you are dead set on putting obsolete technology in your car and getting lower performance, but need to find a tough tranny, just bolt it up to an M5R2 from an F150 and call it a day. Manual transmission. Much less complex than an auto. No technology to worry about. Since it appears to be your goal to make something that is bug-out friendly or as mechanically operated as possible, this should suit your purposes. Otherwise, AOD like ^^that guy said, and then still... good luck on the instruments.

The block is 73 and my main question for fi cuz the sploder I'm looking at getting is a 5.0, is does the motor I have have all the plugs for the additional sensors(even tho if I had to drill a hole or two to accomadate for sensors would not be hard) and if I do run the fi what size injectors should I get? As for specifics on lifters and all the internals on the motor not sure I told the shop to get it as close to running race fuel as possible without crossing that line they told me for it to run properly that it would at least need a 2500 stall and has the sploder gt40 heads on it

are they gt40 or gt40p? that will make a difference on headers, and btw the only off the shelf headers that will work are the torque monster headers. that being said all of the EFI stuff should bolt up, other than possibly the crank sensor. I would think you could drill a hole to mount that though.

Not sure the heads came off my 98 that I rolled and I really appreciate the help on this subject because I've been trying to decide wjat to put the motor in and love explorers just didn't know how much work would be needed was looking for a quick project and you guys have definately swayed me to building the sploder thank you very much

Should be gt40p then, a carb setup can be done on just about anything just takes time in some cases. I have myself even crammed a 5.0 into a Toyota supra.
