And what exactly is your plan for the instrument cluster?
I can't understand why you wouldn't just want to go to a junk yard, pull an intake from a 5.0 explorer (you know they have damn good intakes, right?), and a couple other minor parts, then send out for a tune. FI is more reliable, efficient, makes more power, doesn't get starved for fuel when you are on steep inclines, and it has less parts, which means less failure points. As a bonus, you have a computer that is MADE for one purpose only, making your car run, that can help you figure out why it doesn't run. IMHO, that is a lot better than running all the gauges that I would use to properly tune a carburated engine, and you don't have to adjust your tune for seasons or conditions. Plus, no tranny worries then. Stock 5.0 tranny holds up pretty damn well, and it plugs right into the 5.0 harness. Electronic ignition too. Much more reliable than a distributor, ECU will adjust your timing for you.
Though, if you are dead set on putting obsolete technology in your car and getting lower performance, but need to find a tough tranny, just bolt it up to an M5R2 from an F150 and call it a day. Manual transmission. Much less complex than an auto. No technology to worry about. Since it appears to be your goal to make something that is bug-out friendly or as mechanically operated as possible, this should suit your purposes. Otherwise, AOD like ^^that guy said, and then still... good luck on the instruments.
