I always thought the power lock button in the cargo area of the newer models was a great idea, especially since I don't have an alarm or keyless entry. Would it be possible to install one in my 92? I'm assuming I could just pick up the switch from Ford, but then where would I tap into the power lock circuit?

You can probably tap into the circuit into the leads going to the rear hatch.

That is a very good idea!! I am constantly opening the back hatch, and then having to go back to the front doors to lock the whole car. Instead of going to Ford and paying the big buck for a NEW switch. You could probably get a switch in a junkyard 95+ explorer.?? or an aftermarket el cheapo switch...??

asp84, yeah, that's exactly why I want one. It's a big PITA to open the hatch, load all my stuff and then have to unlock the door again to get in the car. I was thinking about a junkyard switch, but I don't know if they'd sell just the switch or the whole panel. I'll have to find out.

Alec, do you know how the power lock wires are routed into the hatch? Or what color they are? Thanks!

I sat down and studied the wiring diagram for the Power lock system, this would be a very easy conversion to do! The tricky part, is making it integrate the other 4 doors....

For 1994 and earlier:
The liftgate power lock motor has two wires going in to it:
-Pink/Black (unlock relay)
-Pink/Orange (lock relay)
-Of course it is grounded too.

Here is how to make this thing work; in order to make the switch control all 4 doors, you have to tap in to the wiring before the Passenger/Driver Door Power Lock switch. (live +) I would personally just tap in to the passenger side for ease of wiring. Just run two new wires wires from under the dash(that are connected to the PK/B & PK/O), to the back of the hatch and wire in the switch. 95+. ( Find a good location for the switch)
Leave connceted the existing wiring to the liftgate hatch motor, so it sends the signal to the other 4 lock motors. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE? OR DID I LOSE EVERYONE??

Let me know if you have any questions!

REVISION:

Actually, you would'nt have to run the two wire from the front of the car. You would only have to run one. (The power for the liftgate hatch switch) The wire that the power locks use, is the Black and White wire, that is a constant 12V source, and has it's own fuse. I would tap in to this wire, for the power to your switch. Then you would make a T-tap in to the PK/O and PK/B wires that go to your power lock motor in the liftgate. ( remember, you have to splice in this wire because you wnat the signal to be sent to all power locks)

OK, let's see if I have this straight. Tap into the White/Black wire in the front of the car for the 12V power (is that wire bundled with all the others behind the driver's kick panel?). Then, tap into the PK/O and PK/B wires in the rear of the car (just before the lock motor in the liftgate). Is that right?

BTW, big thanks for looking all this up!

Actually, since asp84 and I both have the 1st gen models, can anyone out there with a 95+ model look up the power lock system in their manual and see how that switch is wired in and confirm that we would be doing it correctly?

"can anyone out there with a 95+ model look up the power lock system in their manual and see how that switch is wired in and confirm that we would be doing it correctly?"

Mike 92 XLT: I can do that too.... The 95+ lock system is a little more complex. It uses relays to send 12V to the lock motors, instead of the lock switch controlling the motor (the switch sends the 12V to it). Therefore the switches are a little different, compared to the 94- system. Although don't worry, the 95+ switches can be converted to work on the 94 earlier system. This is how. (By the way, A liftgate lock switch from a 95+ will work fine.)
-Remember that Black/White constant 12 Volt wire that you can find under the dash, In the 94 and earlier system, that wire goes to the switches, while in the 95+ system, it goes to the Relays.(which are controlled by the switches) Even though the 95+ switches serve a different function than the 94- switches, they still can be converted to work!!
Here is how:

A 95+ switch will have three wires attached to it:
PK/Y - to door lock relay system
PK/LG - to door unlock relay sytem
Black - to ground connection <------

A 94 & earlier switch looks like this:
PK/O - lock (to motor)
PK/BK - unlock (to motor)
BK/W - Constant 12 Volt<-----------

So, if you wanted to make this 95+ liftgate switch work, you would have to use the BK/W wire from the 94- system and hook it up to the ground wire on the 95+ switch. (making sure the switch does not touch any ground source.) And then match up the different locks and unlocks color codes, that I have given above! (now use my previous relply to see where you connect this switch in to!)
This is WAY easier than it sounds!!
I am just trying to give a little background lesson on how the two different systems operate. (and that is differently!)

Let me know if you have any questions.

Awesome, thanks Al! Now I just need to track down a switch and find a little time to do this. Unfortunately, that may end up being next year sometime, as it's about to get real cold in Michigan and classes are leaving me with about zero free time. I'll definitely do this mod though. Thanks again!

Take a look at this: Dead Link Removed

Hope it helps...

That'd be perfect except it's the wrong color (my interior is grey). I'll have to keep an eye on eBay for one. Thanks Bill!

Mike 92 XLT:
The switch on Ebay is sold by a company named Big Mountain Automotive. (www.bigmountain.net) You could call them to see if they have the switch. (They probably don't if there trying to get rid of it on E-bay) Anyway.....you could call them, or with a little extra trouble, get one from a wreck 95+ w/ grey interior. On the other note.....My interior is tan.....hmmmmm. maybe I'll have to get that switch. Just Kidding....That would be to easy! I like projects, so therefore I probably get one from a wrecked explorer locally!
