When you press the lock button does your passenger door lock? If it does and only the drivers one doesn't seem to be locking then it may be the lock actuator has broken off the rivet that holds it on.

broken wires in driver door or bad switch.

Almost same thing happened to my F250 except it was with the driver window switch not working. would only roll down but not roll up. I would got find a switch at the junk yard and swap it out and then go from there.

is swapping the switch a pain? most jobs involving electronics make me tear my hair out...

I'm not sure about the explorer but for my truck it was just removing the door panel and and a couple of plugs. Took me about five minutes to pull one out at the junkyard and ten minutes to swap them out and voila it worked again. Usuall the driver side is one big unit.
