Cargo Space Tie Downs.

I'm looking for Ideas.

I have one of those rubber, Husky floor liners in my rear cargo space & love it. However it covers the 4 tie down points and need at least 2 tie down points. I'm thinking of drilling holes in the floor & installing Eye bolts near the edges of the floor/liner but I thought I'd pick your brain's before I drill.

Just take a razor and cut a slot where the tie downs are at and pull them through the plastic. That's all I did when I installed another layer of carpet in the rear.

I know this suggestion would negate the purpose of your liner over about 4 square inches of your cargo area, but why don't you cut out small portions of the liner right above the tie downs? Those four points might get dirty (I don't know what you carry back there), but the factory points would be available.

Dirt's not the problem, water is. I'm a boater/waterskier & there are wetsuits bags that sometimes leak wet ropes etc. also now I'm transporting my snowblower & when the snow melts... it drips. I want to use the tie downs to support the gas can.

Rob, your idea sounds good, but you may want to try putting a small bead of silicone or rtv sealant around the underside of the hole before putting the bolt through it. When it's dry, put a small bead around the top side too, this should help seal the hole from water leaking through. I don't think that that liner is sturdy enough to let you tie something down in this manner though. You may want to consider making yourself a custom cargo box, with compartments just big enough to fit your gas can, etc. snugly.

I'm not sure if I'd want to keep a can of gas in the back of my truck in the first place. The smell and all would start to get to me.

As for water.....as long as you make the cut small enough for the tie downs to fit through, the rubber should mold right around the tie downs. Then just take something really hot and melt the rubber a bit till you can form it abit. Then press it up as tight as you can and you've formed yourself a nice little "seal".

If I were doing all this, I would just remove the tietdowns themselves, they're just bolted in with a 10mm bolt, drill small holes exacly above where they orginally bolted and bolt the tie downs on top of the liner, therefore the pressure from the bolts on the tiedowns would probally elminate the possiblility of leaking on to your carpet, not to mention it would hold down the husky liner quite well.

My Suggestion would be to Use a strong adhesive and glue a small box in the back of your floor liner to place your gas can. You can drill some small holes in the sides of the box and secure the can that way. With bungee Cords or Velcro Straps.

Also if some gas does spill it's in the box. I know that whenever I use a can the bottom of the can always gets gas, dirt, grass and muck on it. So it is some what contained and not rolling all around the floor liner. Getting everything else soaked.
