so recently i was having some noise from the rear end, well it was the carrier bearing. that sucker went completely out before i figured it out. anyway i marked everything to put the driveline back in correctly, tore it apart, put the new bearing in and got it all back together. now i have a strange vibration at about 35 to 45 mph that i can not get rid of. I messed with the alignment of the carrier bearing underneath as much as i could but did not succeed in getting rid of the vibrations. does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next?

thanks

Doesn't replacing the carrier bearing require setting up the gears? I've nev er had to do it myself, but I understand that setting up gears is one of those things where you have to get it just right. Did you measure the backlash? What did you get?

Are you talking about the carrier bearing that supports the driveshaft on Supercab Rangers?

I moved this thread to the Ranger forum.

Check the backlash on the pinion (by hand will give you a good idea) and make sure the carrier is snug (doesnt just fall or slide out when the caps are removed). Also, did you torque the cap bolts to proper spec?

But i doubt the vibration is carrier bearing related.

sorry i should have been more specific, this is a supercab ranger and this the carrier that supports the driveshaft. all the bolts are torqued down to factory specs as well.

thanks for the help

Maybe the driveshaft is out of balance.

Or, if the bearing got loose enough before replacing, it might have affected the T-case output, or trans output if you're 2wd. I'd check there for play.

no vibs before the bearing went out so i do not believe the driveshaft would be out of balance. I checked to the trans output and the rear pumpkin for play and nothing either of those places either. this is a 2wd truck so nothing up front. I am thinking it is something either in the u-joints that connect the two shafts or the carrier bearing location, is there anything i can do there to check those?
