Ok i got my pass side head off.(2001 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOC E-model) I noticed my top(closes to the top of motor or intake) smaller cassette that dont go way down in the block was broke where the one bolt holds it on. That must be why it moved up and down a little bit when i turned the motor over by wrench. Ok can i change that one without taking motor out and disasemble? Man this thing is a headache anyone know where i can buy or rent a cam sprocket positioning tool? I have priced em from 300+to 500$. But i realize i need it to set cams up properly and hold em in place to tighten the cam gears. Thanks in advance Steve

Cassettes

I see it looks like the smaller one just clips on behind the bigger cassette. Not bolted in. can i replace the bad one without pulling the motor? what do i do just easily pry bigger one off mount and put new one in? Is that the only place the big one mounts to also? Because if it only mounts in one spot it would probably be better to buy both cassettes and replace em??? I just dont want to pull the motor. Man what a headache one problem after another

Anyone have a idea on this??

Can anyone help me with this? I am calling around ford dealers to get the new cassettes for it. I dont think autozone would carry it, but i could be wrong. I just have to get it back together and on the road. Thanks i hope someone can answer this and give me good news that i can replace em while motor in the truck

Bought new cassets

I purchased new cassettes for the pass side head i found out its 2 put together. 90$ bucks i paid for the kit i seen as much as 700$. anyways i need to know if there is a way to replace em without pulling the motor. Anyone know what socket or torx to use also. Thanks in advance

The bolt where the two-piece guide bolts in is accessible through the front of the engine by taking the timing chain cover off.

I can some pics from my repair if you want some.

I don't know the answers to your questions, but this is a good thread here:

It would be nice if we could buy the timing tool, and then sell it to the next guy who needs it when we are done. Maybe drop the price by $10 or $20 dollars, and the new buyer pays shipping. You can get used ones on ebay for $100-$150. My Ford dealer offered to lend theirs to me for free. I hope that offer still stands, as I am going to need it very soon

Ya send me pictures please.

I need the passenger side cassettes removed, how to you access it from the front of the motor when the pass side or RH camshaft hooks up to chain in the back and the cassettes are in the back for that head, i know the driver side of LH camshaft and cassette is in the front, maybe i am missing something, ya send me pics to my email or on here i much appreciate it, i just have to drive 1 1/2 hours to get my cherry picker i loaned out, that is if i have to pull the motor to change the cassettes. Thanks Steve stevesmustang@comcast.net

As far as I know the right hand cassettes can only be changed by removing the motor, or the transmission

Ya i will get my cherry picker and pull the motor

Ya i will go to my buddies where i store my cherry picker and pick it up, i will just pull the motor, not many bolts holding it in now since both heads are off, just have tranny bolt, starter, torque converter and engine mounts and yank it out. Thanks for your help. Steve

Good Luck. Take some pics and let us know how it goes...

I will take lots of pictures

Thanks i will take lots of pictures and post when i am done
