I'm looking to put a cat back system on my '98 XLT. Looking for performance, but also not too high of a price tag (under $500).

Also what are ya'lls thoughts on dual pipe vs. single pipe, dual split rear exit vs. dual one side exit, one muffler vs. two?

Any help is greatly appreciated as I am already in over my head.

Thanks from deep in the heart of Texas!!!

Unless you really want to brag about your exhaust, you can get a good cat back for under $200. Granted it won't be Mandrel bent, but it will be good. Find a local muffler shop, tell them what you want. Everyone has their personal preference. Mine is Flowmaster. 50 series is good. 40 series will be louder. Then get the muffler shop to run 2.25" pipe out the back. Single or Dual is again preference. I don't like duals on a V6, I don't think it sounds right.
I have a Flowmaster 50 series SUV muffler Dual in /Single out, from the cats back. Then 2.25" Aluminum pipes with a side exit at 45 degrees behind the back wheel. I paid $170.

Well, first off, for most exhaust systems, you won't have to worry about going over $500. Second, you can get a split rear setup using one muffler or two mufflers. I chose to do my dual exhaust with one, dual in/dual out muffler. Flowmaster 50 series SUV muffler to be exact. The pipes were all custom bent by a local shop. The whole job (muffler, pipes, stainless tips, and labor) came to about $400. I have been asked several times, "Why doesn't your V8 have the 'V8' emblem on the side". I have heard a V8 with the same muffler as mine with duals and they sound the same. Worth every penny and it makes my explorer different than any other one (except for the few with dual exhaust on the board). Good Luck!

I recommend a local shop custom making one for you. I paid $200 for my custom cat back.

Good luck....

I went with a custom setup also. Mine was $250, with 40 Series Flowmaster, dual 2 1/2" aluminum pipes, and 3 1/2" chrome tips. I have a pics link in my sig with some exhaust pics.
